#14 Emory Ends Regular Season with Scoreless Draw at Carnegie Mellon

The 14th-ranked Emory University Men's Soccer team capped off its 2014 regular season campaign with a double-overtime scoreless draw against Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first scoreless tie Emory has played to in over four years.  The Eagles' last scoreless game took place on October 3rd, 2010 at Washington University (Mo.).

The shutout was the third-straight for Emory, each of which has been in a conference contest, and the squad's ninth overall this season.  The Eagles have not allowed a goal to an opponent in their last 330 minutes and 18 seconds of game time, lowering their season goals-against average to 0.53.

Emory was able to restrict the host to just two shots in the first half, with just one on goal that was turned aside by junior keeper Abe Hannigan.  However, the Eagles registered just three shots of their own during the first 45 minutes, and despite all three being on goal, none were able to make it into the net to break the scoreless tie.  Emory also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks after the first frame.

The Eagles' best opportunity of the first half was a ninth-minute shot by junior Sebastian Hardington that was tipped over the crossbar by the Carnegie Mellon keeper, Jacob Rice

The field opened up for both offenses in the second half, with the Tartans outshooting the Eagles 6-4 in the frame.  Emory came close to taking the lead in the 76th minute, when junior Scott Haley launched a shot on goal from long distance, but once again, Rice was able to make the save.

In the second overtime, Emory came close to notching the game winner when Rice came well off his line to play a ball, leaving the net exposed.  Junior Nick Schook took a shot, but the ball was cleared away by a Carnegie defender to preserve the clean sheet.

Hannigan made a pair of saves for the Eagles in the game, en route to recording his eighth individual shutout of the year.  He lowered his goals-against average to 0.56, while raising his save percentage to .815.

Emory outshot Carnegie 12-10 in the game, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal, and a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

With the tie Emory wrapped-up its regular season with a 13-3-2 overall record, including a 3-3-1 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) games.  The Eagles are currently third in the UAA standings, with the potential to finish in fourth if Case Western Reserve defeats Rochester later in the day on Saturday.

Chicago claimed the UAA title outright on Saturday, earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a 1-0 win over Washington, while Brandeis finished second in the standings.

Emory will now await the announcement of the field of the 61 teams for the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships, as the squad will be hoping for one of the 18 pool 'C' at large bids available to teams that did not win their conference's automatic bid.  The tournament field, along with match dates, times and locations, will be announced via a live webcast on NCAA.com on Monday, November 10th at 1:30 PM.  Fans can also watch the webcast at http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2014/1825&date=2014/11/10
