Berry Upends 11th-Ranked Emory 2-1 in 2 OT of NCAA First Round Game

Berry Upends 11th-Ranked Emory 2-1 in 2 OT of NCAA First Round Game

Berry College overcame a late one goal deficit, scoring with just over two minutes in regulation to tie the match, and then notching the game-winning 'golden goal' in in the second overtime period, to advance past 11th-ranked Emory University, 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday night.

Berry, 13-6-1 on the year, moves on to the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday, November 15th at 6:00 PM at Emory University.  The Vikings will face the winner of the first-round contest between 12th-ranked Whitworth University and Covenant College, to be played later Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 and running short on time, Berry's Alex Rotoloni sent a corner kick to the far post, where Bobby Grunow was able to head it in for the equalizer at the 87:51 mark.  It was the third goal of the season for Grunow, and eventually sent the game into overtime.

In the second overtime, Berry's Christian Fulbright was able to maintain possession of the ball along the end line, driving past an Emory defender and pulling goalkeeper Abe Hannigan away from the net, before sending a pass to Zak Wallingford, who was able to finish with a shot into the empty net for the game-winning 'golden goal,' his sixth score of the campaign.

The two late goals for the Vikings came from a late push by the squad, after the team entered the locker room at half down a goal, after being outshot 12-4 during the frame.  Emory junior Sebastian Hardington gave the Eagles the lead in the 31st minute with his team-leading seventh goal of the season.  The scoring opportunity was created when sophomore Jason Andrejchak took a long range shot that was saved by Berry keeper Jon Nelson.  However, Hardington was able to collect the deflection off the shot inside the six-yard box, and send a shot past Nelson for the go-ahead score.

Andrejchak earned an assist on the play, his team-leading seventh of the season.

The Eagles would carry the 1-0 lead through the half, outshooting the Vikings 12-4 during the period, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.  However, in the second half, the Vikings came out on the attack, outshooting the Eagles 17-6 the remainder of the game, eventually resulting in the two goals.

Goalkeeper Zachary Wroblewski came in to play the second half for Berry, eventually earning the victory with 62 minutes of scoreless soccer and three saves.  Hannigan played the entirety of the game for the Eagles in goal, making five saves.

Emory's 2014 campaign came to a close with an overall record of 13-4-2.
