Emory’s Matt Sherr Named to D3Soccer.com All-America Team

Emory’s Matt Sherr Named to D3Soccer.com All-America Team

Emory University junior defender Matt Sherr was named a third team All-American by D3Soccer.com, following his standout performance for the squad during the 2014 season.

Sherr becomes the first Eagle ever to be named to the D3Soccer.com All-America team, since the website began publishing the annual list in 2010.  He becomes the 15th All-American (named by any organization) in the history of Emory Men's Soccer, and the first since Andrew Natalino was selected as a third team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2010.

Sherr served as a co-captain of an Emory defense that was one of the best in Division III in 2014, with the squad recording a goals-against average of 0.60, the 16th-best mark in the NCAA.  Sherr and the Eagles' backline notched nine shutout efforts and helped limit opponents to averages of 11.1 shots and 3.4 shots on goal per game, while yielding just 12 goals to the opposition.

Sherr started 16 games during the season and appeared in 17 total.  He added two goals and an assist on the offensive side of the field, including the 'golden goal' in a 2-1 overtime win against conference rival Washington University (Mo.) on October 5th.  Sherr finished the year with nine shots, including four on goal.

In addition to the All-America accolade, Sherr was selected to the all-University Athletic Association First Team and was the Most Valuable Player at the Warrior Classic in 2014.  He was named the UAA Athlete of the Week on both September 15th and September 29th, and was placed on the Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for his academic and athletic achievements during the year.

Sherr and the Eagles finished the 2014 season with a 13-4-2 overall record, qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the 15th time in the program's history.
