Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie with Oglethorpe in Season Opener

The 23rd ranked Emory men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw in the 2015 season opener against Oglethorpe University on Tuesday night.

Not many scoring opportunities could be found for either team in the contest as both squads combined for just five shots on goal in the 110 minutes of action. Emory went without a shot on goal until the second overtime period before putting together three straight solid scoring chances.

First, Matt Sherr tried a header off a Christian Meyer corner kick but was denied. Aidan Datene also tried a header off a Meyer corner but the Stormy Petrels made a team save to prevent the freshman forward from notching his first career goal. Gabriel Vasconcelos tried to put the rebound pass the Oglethorpe goalkeeper but was stymied as well.

For the game, Emory outshot Oglethorpe 14-9 with a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Abe Hannigan picked up his 18th career shutout, saving both shots that came his way.

The Eagles are now 31-3-2 all-time against the Stormy Petrels and now own an all-time mark of 20-8-3 in season openers including being unbeaten in their last four (1-0-3).

Emory will be back in action this weekend as they host the annual Sonny Carter Invitational. The Eagles will face St. Joseph's from Long Island and Denison University in the tournament. The opening kickoff for both contests is scheduled for 2:00pm.
