Christian Meyer helped the Emory University men's soccer team to a well needed victory on Saturday evening as the sophomore scored the game-winning goal with just 2:36 remaining in regulation to aid the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Berry College. The win snapped a string a three losses in a row for the Blue and Gold.
Meyer battled the Vikings goalkeeper for the ball following a long free kick from Matt Sherr at midfield. Meyer won possession and proceeded to knock it in as the Berry goalie fell to the ground. The goal was the second on the season for the Hinsdale, IL native.
Darion Morgan started the scoring, putting Emory on the scoreboard with seven seconds left in the first half. Jason McCartney fed a beautiful pass to Morgan who played it off his chest before putting it past the Viking goalkeeper right in front of the net.
Connor Garrett scored the equalizer for Berry in the 75th minute as he gained possession after a misplayed ball by the Eagles defense in the Vikings offensive zone. Garrett took a few steps before he rifled one past Abe Hannigan from just inside the 18 yard line. Hannigan finished with two saves on the day to pick up his second win of the season.
Emory outshot Berry 26-6 and had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. The game was also a very physical affair with 26 fouls called and five yellow cards and one ejection being issued by the head referee. The Vikings played with 10 men for the final 10:56 which helped Emory to the one-goal win.
The start of the game was delayed as well for close to three hours due to the lack of officials.
Emory will return to action as the team travels to Sewanee this Wednesday night at 7:00pm for the first of four straight games away from Atlanta.
