Men's Soccer Runs Win Streak to Six, Knocks off #17 Washington 1-0

Men's Soccer Runs Win Streak to Six, Knocks off #17 Washington 1-0

The Emory University men's soccer team ran its win streak to six games on Saturday afternoon, defeating #17 Washington University 1-0. With the win, the Eagles moved to 2-0 and first place in the University Athletic Association.

Sophomore Christian Meyer provided the heroics, scoring the game-winning goal in the 81st minute. Scott Haley dished a perfect through ball in the middle of the field past three Washington defenders to Meyer who took a few steps before beating Bears' GK Daniel Geanon for the goal. Matt Sherr also assisted on the play.

Abe Hannigan made the save on the only ball that came his way as the senior extended his career-long shutout streak to five straight games, which tied him for the second longest streak in program history. Hannigan has not allowed a goal in the last 477.12 minutes.

The game was contained in the midfield for most of the 90 minutes with the two teams combining for just 13 shots with only four on target. Emory mustered three shots on goal compared to Washington's one.  With the scoring chances limited, the Eagles had their first real opportunity in the 80th minute as Sherr took the ball almost the length of the field, bypassing numerous defenders before firing a shot wide of the net. Meyer was able to breakthrough a minute later to lead the Blue and Gold to the win.

Emory will try to keep the streak going with two UAA matchups this weekend. The Eagles will face #16 Case Western Reserve on Friday night before a meeting with Carnegie Mellon on Sunday afternoon.
