Emory Men's Tennis Tops NYU In Quarterfinals Of UAA Championships

The No. 1-ranked Emory men's tennis team opened defense of its University Athletic Association title on a successful note Thursday, registering a victory over New York University in the quarterfinals.   The Eagles raised their overall record to 18-3 following an 8-1 decision over the Violets who fell to 4-9.  This year's UAA Championships are being held in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Emory built a 3-0 lead after doubles and never looked back en route to notching its fifth straight triumph and raising its Division III slate to 16-0.  The No. 2 tandem of senior Rafe Mosetick and freshman Jonathan Jemison pocketed their fifth straight win, and raised their spring record to 15-3 with an 8-1 verdict vs. Umberto Setter and Shrikar Kundur.  At third doubles, freshmen David Omsky and Andrew Harrington ran their win streak to five matches after registering an 8-3 outcome over Benedict Teoh and Matt DeMichiel.  Sophomore Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding closed out the sweep, winning at No. 1, 8-5, against Sidd Thangirala and Sammy Aronson.

The Eagles were victorious in five singles contests, with Mosetick leading the way at No. 1, bettering Thangirala, 6-0, 6-4, for his 22nd win in 28 decisions this season.  In addition, it represented his 86th career singles victory, just one win shy of tying for the No. 7 position on the program's all-time list.  Freshman Jonathan Jemison came through with his seventh consecutive victory, 6-0, 6-4, over Teoh at No. 2, boosting his season won-lost mark to 23-4.  Junior Aman Manji defeated Setter, 6-0, 6-3, at third singles, lifting his spring record to 14-3 (13-2 at No. 3).  Freshmen Adrien Bouchet and Harrington rounded out the Emory singles winners at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively.

Emory advances to Friday's semifinals where it will take on No. 8-ranked Carnegie in a scheduled 2:00 pm start.  The Tartans, 15-5, opened the Championships with a 6-3 win over No. 6 Case Western Reserve.
