Distance Runners Highlight Weekend for Emory Track & Field

Split between a pair of meets this weekend, the Emory University Track and Field Team notched a numbers of standout performances, particularly from the distance and mid-distance groups.

Emory's distance and mid-distance runners made their way to East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee for the Buccaneer Invitational.  For the men, freshman Max Brown finished fourth in the seeded mile with a time of 4:16.91, the fourth-fastest time in the event in school history, and the second-fastest in the University Athletic Association and 42nd-fastest in Division III this season.  Other strong performances in the men's seeded mile came from freshmen Jordan Flowers (13th, 4:23.59) and Shane Sullivan (14th, 4:23.98) and sophomore Michael McBane (16th, 4:25.09).

Sophomore Grant Murphy placed fourth in the seeded 3,000-meter run with a mark of 8:44.42, the fourth-best by a UAA competitor this year.  Murphy, sophomore Ian McIsaac, Brown and Flowers also finished second in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:34.07.

Other top performance at the meet by the Emory men came from junior Lukas Mees in the 5,000-meter run (18th, 15:35.08), senior Kevin Delaney in the 800-meter run (fifth, 1:58.77) and senior Scott Greathouse in the high jump (18th, 1.87 meters).

For the women, senior Stephanie Crane finished third in the seeded mile with a time of 5:09.33, the sixth-fastest in the UAA this year, while adding an eighth-place finish in the seeded 800-meter run with a mark of 2:20.35.  Sophomore Alexa Young added a win in the unseeded 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.49, while other top performers for the Eagles included junior Aileen Rivell in the 5,000-meter run (15th, 18:56.53), and senior Marissa Gogniat in the seeded 3,000-meter run (10:36.34).

Emory also sent a small contingent of athletes to the USC Open at the University of South Carolina on Saturday.  For the men, freshman Phillip Greenfield finished 37th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds, while junior Spencer Koh placed 38th in the event with a time of 6.89 seconds, and won the pole vault by clearing the bar at a height of 4.20 meters.

For the women at the meet, freshman Caitlin Cheeseboro finished 26th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.86 seconds and ninth in the 55-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.87 seconds.  In the pole vault, senior Elaina Kim placed second with a height of 3.20 meters, while Dara Liss claimed sixth-place with a mark of 3.00 meters.

The Eagles are scheduled to split the squad once again next weekend, with both the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama and the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee on the team's schedule.
