Mid-Distance Runners Stand Out for Emory at VertKlasse Meeting

Emory University turned in a number of strong performances, including a number from its mid-distance runners, while facing mostly NCAA Division I competition at the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Max Brown led the way for the Emory men, recording a time of 3:55.27 in the 1,500-meter run to place sixth.  Brown's time was good for the seventh-fastest in school history, and the eighth-fastest among NCAA Division III competitors this season.  Sophomore Grant Murphy claimed 15th-place in the event, with his time of 3:58.01 ranking 17th among Division III runners in 2015.

Senior Hannah Smith smashed her own career-best mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 11:07.73, claiming the lone first-place finish of the meet for the Eagles.  Her time ranks her 10th among Division III runners in 2015.  Junior Julie Williamson added a time of 2:14.66, her second-best mark of the season and tied for the eighth-fastest in school history.

Freshman Julia Leventhal recording the top times this season by an Eagle in a pair of events, placing 11th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.59 seconds, and 26th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.03 seconds.  Other top marks by an Eagle this season came from senior Madison Hoeninghausen in the javelin throw (33.93 meters, seventh place), freshman Kora Dreffs in the shot put (11.06 meters, 24th place), freshman Caitlin Cheeseboro in the 100-meter hurdles (15.34 seconds, 13th place) and freshman Zoe Fowler in the hammer throw (41.86 meters, 12th place).

Adding season-best marks by an Eagle for the men were Phillip Greenfield in the 100-meter dash (11.10 seconds, ninth place) and junior Jacob Seigel in the discus throw (42.80 meters, 15th place).

The Eagles are slated to return to action next weekend at the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, and the Spec Town Invitational & Multi, hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
