#10 Emory Claims Third-Straight Win with 2-0 Victory at Berry

The 10th-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer Team recorded its third-straight victory and second-straight shutout on Sunday afternoon, defeating Berry College 2-0 in Mount Berry, GA.

With the three-straight wins, each of which has come against a regional opponent, the Eagles improved to 5-2-1 on the season.  Meanwhile, Emory handed Berry just its second loss of the campaign, as the Vikings dropped to 6-2-0 overall.

The Eagles jumped out to the early lead in the game, turning an eighth-minute corner kick into a goal.  Junior Charlotte Butker took the corner kick, targeting senior defender Lauren Gorodetsky inside the six-yard box.  Gorodetsky would find the ball in traffic, heading it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season, each of which has come in the last two games.

The goal was the 10th of Gorodetsky's career, and would go on to be her sixth career game-winning goal.  It also marked her second-straight contest with a game-winning score, after the center back scored both goals during Emory's 2-0 win over Birmingham-Southern College on Friday night.  Butker claimed her first assist of the season and the 17th of her career, tying her for 17th-place in school history in the category.

The 1-0 lead would hold though the end of the first half for the Eagles, who outshot the Vikings 8-1 during the first 45 minutes, including a 4-0 edge in shots on goal.

Emory would maintain the one-goal advantage for the majority of the game, before freshman Cristina Ramirez added a key insurance goal in the 82nd minute of play.  After the Berry keeper mishandled a ball in the 18-yard box, Ramirez was able to gain possession a sneak a shot into the corner of the goal for her second score of the year.

The Eagles defense limited the Vikings to just one shot on goal during the game and seven total shots.  Sophomore Liz Arnold played the first half in goal, and junior Gabrielle Pelura the second, to combine for the clean sheet, the duo's second combined shutout of the season.

Emory's offense was able to register 18 shots in the game and 10 on goal, including a team-best three shots by both freshman Julia Bassell and senior Veronica Romero.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards a three-game home stand, starting on Saturday, September 28th at 1:30 PM against Rhodes College.
