#8 Emory Shuts out #23 Carnegie in Regular Season Finale

The eighth-ranked Emory University Women's Soccer Team closed out its 2013 regular season with a shutout win over a nationally-ranked opponent, defeating 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 3-0 at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon.

Emory will likely head into the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid with a 14-3-1 overall record, and winners of 12 of their last 13 games.  The victory also extended the Eagles' win streak to seven games, while the defense recorded its fifth-consecutive shutout and 10th overall this season.

Carnegie finished its regular season with a record of 9-4-2, including a 3-3-1 mark in conference play.

The Eagles jumped out to the early lead in the game behind all-American defender Lauren Gorodetsky's fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute.  The play was set up by a short corner kick from junior Charlotte Butker, who found a wide open Veronica Romero just outside of the 18-yard box.  Romero sent a cross towards the far post, where Gorodetsky was waiting to finish with a header past the keeper, giving the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.

Emory had an opportunity to add onto its lead later in the half, when a scrum in front of Carnegie's goal led to three-straight shots by the Eagles - one saved by goalkeeper Anna Albi, another saved by a defender, and a third that hit off the crossbar – before the ball was cleared by the Tartans' defense.  Emory finished the first half with an 11-5 lead in shots and a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Emory extended its lead in the 65th minute, when junior Jennifer Grant struck for her second goal of the campaign.  Gorodetsky started the scoring opportunity for the Eagles, sending a long free kick into the six-yard box.  The ball was tapped to Grant by junior Karina Rodriguez, and Grant finished with a shot past Albi for the score.

The Eagles capped off the victory with a goal from junior Emily Feldman in the 85th minute.  After an initial shot from senior Samantha Bleiweis was blocked by a defender, Feldman secured a rebound inside the 18-yard box and sent a shot into the net for her second goal of the campaign.

Emory outshot Carnegie 27-6 in the game, including a 16-1 performance during the second half.  The Eagles took 12 shots on goal, compared to just two for the Tartans.  Goalkeeper Liz Arnold played the entire game in goal, recording her sixth individual shutout of the season and lowering her goals-against average to 0.41.

Saturday's game also marked 'Senior Day' for the Eagles, as Emory honored its seven graduating players – Bleiweis, Caitlin Clark, Kelly Costopoulos, Lauren Drosick, Gorodetsky, Clare Mullins and Veronica Romero – in a special ceremony prior to the start of the game.  Mullins and Costopoulos each made their 82nd career appearance for Emory on Saturday, setting a new program record.

Despite the win, the Eagles fell short of a share the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, after top-ranked Washington University (Mo.) claimed a 2-0 win at Chicago.  Emory finished one game back of the Bears in the conference with a 6-1-0 UAA mark.

The Eagles will now await the announcement of the field and bracket for the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships on Monday.  Both will be revealed during a live webcast on NCAA.com at 1:30 PM.  A link to the webcast will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com on Monday morning.
