Gorodetsky Named First Three-Time MVP in UAA History

Gorodetsky Named First Three-Time MVP in UAA History

Emory University senior defender Lauren Gorodetsky became the first three-time Most Valuable Player in the history of University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Soccer, headlining a list of seven Eagles named to the 2013 all-conference teams.

Along with Gorodetsky's MVP honor, freshman defender Hannah Meyer was named the UAA's Rookie of the Year.  Three Eagles – Gorodetsky, senior midfielder Kelly Costopoulos and senior defender Lauren Drosick – were named to the all-UAA First Team, while junior forward Charlotte Butker was selected to the all-UAA Second Team.  Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Arnold, Meyer and senior midfielder Clare Mullins were each chosen as honorable mentions to the all-UAA squads.

Gorodetsky has now been named the UAA MVP each of the last three seasons, and has claimed a spot on the all-UAA First Team each of her four seasons on the team.  She joins former Eagles Andrea Pawliczek (1998-2001) and Stacy Epstein (1987-90) as the only four-time first team selections in the program's history.

Meanwhile, Meyer is just the second Emory player to be named UAA Rookie of the Year in the program's history, joining Costopoulos, who claimed the honor in 2010.

Gorodetsky, along with Meyer and Drosick, played major minutes for an Emory defense that ranks among the best in Division III with a 0.49 goals-against average and 10 shutouts during the campaign.  Gorodetsky added on four goals and two assists for 10 points, including three game-winning goals, and a goal and two assists in UAA matches.  Drosick, who was an honorable mention to the all-UAA team, contributed with a goal in conference play and two assists in non-conference matches, while Meyer played in all 18 games during the season, making 13 starts at center back.

Costopoulos, the Eagles' lone captain, finished the regular season second on the squad with five goals, and third on the team with 11 points.  Two of her scores during the year came in conference games, including a game-winning goal against Case Western Reserve University.  It marked the third time that Costopoulos has earned all-UAA recognition, in addition to second-team selections in 2010 and 2012.

Butker was the only Eagles to start all of the team's 18 games during the season, finishing the year with three goals and four assists for 10 points.  Her goal and three assists in UAA contests tied her for sixth in the conference in points and second in assists.  This is the second-straight season that Butker has earned all-UAA acclaim, after being named an honorable mention last season.

In her first season as a starter, Arnold led all UAA goalkeepers with a 0.29 goals-against average and five shutouts in UAA contests, and was second among all conference keepers with a .900 save percentage.  Overall for the season, Arnold went 13-2-1 with six shutouts, while recording a 0.41 GAA and a .860 save percentage in 18 games and 14 starts.

Mullins claimed her second all-UAA honor, after being named to the first team during her sophomore campaign.  The holding midfielder was a key contributor to the Eagles' defense, while also contributing with two goals during the year, both of which were game-winning scores.   One of her goals came in UAA play, the game winner against Brandeis.  In addition, her 82 career games played and starts are both program records.

The Eagles finished the 2013 regular season with a 14-3-1 record, while finishing second in the UAA with a 6-1-0 conference record.
