Eagles Return to Action with Split against Florida Southern

In a meeting of two of the top-ranked programs in their respective NCAA Divisions, the Emory University Swimming and Diving Team split its meet at Florida Southern College on Friday afternoon, with the top-ranked Emory women claiming a 176-105 win over the Moccasins (ranked sixth in Division II), and the third-ranked men falling 176-107 to their counterparts (ranked third in Division II).

With the win, the Emory women kept their perfect record in dual meets this season intact, improving to 5-0 overall, while the men dropped to 2-2 overall.  For Florida Southern, the men improved to 3-1, while the women dropped to 1-4.

The Emory women claimed first-place finishes in 11 of the 14 events on Friday, while recording three NCAA 'B' cut times.  Two of the three 'B' cuts came in the 200-yard breaststroke, with sophomore Annelise Kowalski winning the event with a time of 2:23.75, and junior Elizabeth Aronoff finishing second with a time of 2:24.13.  The other 'B' cut time came from Rebecca Upton, who won the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 2:08.29.

Both junior Ellie Thompson and senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg won multiple individual events, with Thompson sweeping the backstroke events with times of 59.14 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:06.20 in the 200-yard backstroke, and Newsum-Schoenberg finishing first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:23.53) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.60).  Thompson also teamed with Kowalsky, sophomore Kristine Rosenberger and sophomore Claire Liu to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:47.57.

Other individual first-place finishers included senior Dana Holt in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.20), senior Nancy Larson in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86 seconds), freshman Megan Campbell in the 100-yard butterfly (59.45 seconds) and freshman Ming Ong in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.20).

The Emory men were led by another strong outing from junior Andrew Wilson, who won three events on Friday.  He swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.49 seconds and the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:02.56, each good for an NCAA 'B' cut time.  Wilson also won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.82.

Sophomore Christian Baker added the fourth winning effort for the men on Friday, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.09.

The Eagles will be back in action next week at the Austin Grand Prix, hosted by the University of Texas from Thursday, January 15th – Saturday, January 17th.
