Third-Ranked Eagles Earn First Victories of 2012 Against Huntingdon & Agnes Scott

The third-ranked Emory University women's tennis team returned to its winning ways on Sunday, earning 9-0 victories over Huntingdon College and Agnes Scott College at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Facing their first Division III opponents of the spring season, the pair of quick victories raised Emory's record to 2-2 on the season.  Huntingdon dropped to 1-1 on the campaign, while Agnes Scott fell to 0-2.

The Eagles were dominant in doubles play during the early match against Huntingdon, winning all three matches by an 8-1 score.  Sophomores Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan took home the victory in the first doubles match, sophomore Gabrielle Clark and senior Zahra Dawson won the second doubles match, and junior Jordan Wylie and freshman Danielle Truitt came out on top as the third doubles pairing.

All six Emory singles players claimed straight-set victories as well, led by Wylie's 6-1, 6-1 win in the first singles match.  Dawson won 6-0, 6-0 in second singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 victory for sophomore Taylor Brandt in the third singles match and a 6-0, 6-0 win for Padmanabhan in the fourth-singles contest.  Freshman Catharine Harris won 6-0, 6-1 in fifth singles and freshman Danielle Truitt earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in the sixth singles match to complete the shutout.

The Eagles continued their dominance against Agnes Scott, again winning all three doubles matches with a reshuffled lineup.  Clark and Dawson won 8-1 in the first doubles match, as did Kelly and Padmanabhan in the second doubles contest.  Wylie and Truitt claimed an 8-3 win in the third doubles match.

Emory continued to rack-up the straight-set victories in singles play against the Scotties.  Dawson (third singles), Harris (fourth singles) and freshman Lauren Pinsky (fifth singles) each held their opponents without a game victory, winning 6-0, 6-0.  Clark earned a 6-0, 6-3 win in the first singles match, Brandt claimed a 6-2, 6-0 second singles win, and Kelly rounded out the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win in sixth singles.

Sunday's two matches wrap up a five game season-opening home stand for the Eagles.  Emory will return to action on Thursday, February 23rd at 3:00 PM at Shorter College, an NAIA school.
