#3 Emory Claims 7-2 Win over NAIA #15 Shorter in Rome, GA

The third-ranked Emory University women's tennis team ran its winning streak to three matches on Thursday with a 7-2 win at Shorter College, the 15th-ranked squad in the NAIA.

The victory marked the first over a non-Division III team this season for the Eagles, now 3-2 on the campaign.  Shorter fell to 5-2 on the season with the loss.

The win for Emory over a ranked opponent was made more impressive by the fact that the team's top singles and doubles player, Gabrielle Clark, was not available for the match.  Clark, a two-sport athlete at Emory, will be attending the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.

The two teams split the first two doubles matches, with sophomore Malavika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly earning an 8-6 win in the second doubles match, knotting the score at 1-1 after an 8-4 loss for senior Zahra Dawson and sophomore Taylor Brandt in the first doubles match.  The deciding doubles point was won by Emory junior Jordan Wylie and freshman Danielle Truitt in the third match, as the duo was able to battle to a 9-8 (4) victory over their counterparts from Shorter.

Emory continued to play well into the singles matches, winning five of the six contests (including four in straight-sets) to secure the victory.  Filling in for Clark, Wylie set the pace for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first singles match, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win for Dawson in the second singles contest.  The other two straight-set victories for Emory came from Padmanabhan in the fifth singles match (6-4, 6-2) and freshman Lauren Pinsky in the sixth singles match (6-0, 6-1).  Brandt added a hard-fought 7-5, 1-6, 10-7 win in the third singles match to cap off the day for the Eagles, improving to a team-best 3-0 in singles play in the spring season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, March 6th, hosting Brenau  University at  3:00 PM at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
