Clark wins ITA Small College D-III Championship

Emory University junior Gabrielle Clark defeated Lok-Sze Leung of Middlebury College in three sets to claim the NCAA Division III singles title at the 2012 ITA Small College Nationals on Saturday afternoon.

Clark battled back after dropping the first set, 5-7, to win the next two in a row, 6-3 and 6-4.

Emory has not had a singles participant reach the 'Super Bowl' since 2003, when former Eagle Jolyn Taylor finished tied for third.  Mary Ellen Gordon is the only other player in the program's history to win the Division III singles draw at the ITA Small College Nationals, doing so in both 2000 and 2002.

Earlier in the tournament, Clark teamed with freshman Emma Taylor to win the Division III doubles draw as well.  Combined with the singles victory, Clark joins Gordon in 2002 as the only Emory player to win both draws in the same season.

Advancing to the 'Super Bowl' later in the day on Saturday, Clark suffered just her second singles loss of the season, falling to Barbora Krtickova of Division II Atlantic Armstrong State University in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.  Both of Clark's singles losses this season have come against higher-Division opponents.

Clark and Taylor also suffered a loss in the doubles draw of the 'Super Bowl,' as Armstrong's Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski bested the Eages duo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Saturday's matches conclude the 2012 fall season for both Clark and Taylor.  The rest of the Emory squad will wrap up play at the Duckworth Fall Classic on Sunday, before ending their fall season.  A full recap of the Duckworth Fall Classic will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com after all matches are completed.
