Emory Women’s Tennis the Top Seed in Upcoming UAA Championships

The Emory University Women's Tennis team was selected as the top-seeded squad for the 2013 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, to be held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida from Thursday, April 25th – Saturday, April 27th.

The UAA features a loaded field this season, both on the team and individual level.  The conference features three women's tennis teams ranked in the top-10 nationally, and six teams ranked in the top-25.  Along with Emory, ranked third in Division III, competing squads include second-seeded and 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, third-seeded and 10th-ranked Washington University (Mo.), fourth-seeded and seventh-ranked Chicago, fifth-seeded and 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve, and sixth-seeded and 24th-ranked Brandeis.  Although not ranked nationally, Rochester, the seventh-seeded team in the field, is ranked 12th in the Northeast Region, while New York University, the eighth-seeded team, is ranked 18th in the Northeast.

Emory's first round match will be against eighth-seeded New York University at 9:00 AM on Thursday. The Eagles, 10-4 in 2013, are 9-0 all-time against the Violets, who are 5-3 this season.  Other first-round matches include Carnegie Mellon and Rochester, Chicago and Case, and Washington and Brandeis, all at 9:00 AM on Thursday.

The semifinal and consolation matches will be held on Friday at 2:00 PM.  Should the Eagles defeat NYU in the opening round, they will face the winner of the match between Chicago and Case in the semifinals.  The Championship match, along with the third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place matches, will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday.

Competing in the field will be 14 regionally-ranked singles players, including three from Emory in the Atlantic South Region – top-ranked junior Gabrielle Clark, 10th-ranked freshman Beatrice Rosen and 11th-ranked freshman Marissa Levine.  Other top-five ranked regional singles player in action will be Katie Cecil of Carnegie Mellon (third in the Atlantic South), Megan Tang of Chicago (first in the Central), Theresa Petraskova of Washington (second in the Central) and Sara Zargham of Case Western Reserve (third in the Central).

In addition, 10 of the doubles team scheduled to compete are featured in the regional rankings.  Emory is represented by two – the third-ranked pairing of Clark and freshman Annette Sullivan, and the 10th-ranked team of senior Jordan Wylie and freshman Madison Gordon.  Other top-five ranked doubles pairings include Cecil and Angela Pratt of Carnegie Mellon (fourth in the Atlantic South), Tang and Helen Sdvizkhov of Chicago (first in the Central) and Faith Broderick and Carley Cooke of Brandeis (fifth in the Northeast).

Emory has won 23 of the 25 University Athletic Association (UAA) Women's Tennis Championships, including each of the first 22.  The Eagles have finished no worse than second in the history of conference competition, dating back to the 1988 season.
