Satterfield Claims ITA Singles Title; Teams with Siegler for Doubles Championship

Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield won a pair of matches on Sunday in Sewanee, Tennessee to claim the USTA/ITA South Region Singles Championship, and later teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler to claim the doubles title as well.

By virtue of winning the Regional Championships, Satterfield and Siegler will advance to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships in Fort Meyers, Florida, where they will face the other regional winners in the doubles and singles draws.

With only Emory entrants remaining on the final day of competition at the University of the South, the first semifinal match to finish proved to be an upset, as freshman and sixth-seeded Melissa Goodman earned a ticket to the finals with a three-set victory over top-seeded sophomore Beatrice Rosen, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.  The other semifinal, pitting Satterfield, the second-seeded freshman, against fifth-seeded sophomore Madison Gordon would be a marathon, needing four hours and 40 minutes to decide a winner.  After Satterfield won a tiebreaker to claim the first set 7-6 (1), Gordon battled back to claim a 6-4 victory in the second set, setting up a match-deciding third set.  The third frame would go to a tiebreaker as well, with Satterfield emerging triumphant, winning 7-6 (3).

Despite the short turnaround after the semifinals, Satterfield would be victorious in the championship match as well, winning in straight sets over Goodman, 6-3, 6-2.  Satterfield became the first Emory freshman to win an USTA/ITA Fall South Region Championship since Serena Burkard in 2004, and just the third overall in the program's history, along with Mary Ellen Gordon in 2000.

In the lone doubles match during the day, Satterfield and Siegler, the second-seeded duo, earned an 8-2 victory over top-seeded teammates Brenna Kelly and Goodman to win the draw.

Satterfield and Siegler will now turn their attention towards the Small College Nationals, which will be held from October 10th – 13th.  The rest of the Emory squad will return to action at the Southern Shootout in Piedmont Park, from October 11th – 13th.
