Satterfield to Play for D-III USTA/ITA Singles Championship

Emory University freshman Michelle Satterfield won her seventh-straight match to start her collegiate career, winning her semifinal contest on Friday morning at the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals and earning a berth into Saturday's singles semifinals in Fort Meyers, Florida.

Satterfield quickly rolled through her semifinal match, completing the first upset of the singles draw with a 6-1, 6-0 win over top-seeded Megan Tang of University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Chicago.  With the win, Satterfield will advance to the championship match of the singles draw against second-seeded Sonja Meighan of Washington and Lee University, who defeated third-seeded Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran University 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.  Satterfield and Meighan will play at 11:30 AM on Saturday.

This marks the third-straight season that Emory will be represented in the USTA/ITA Division III Singles Championship match.  Senior Gabrielle Clark reached the finals each of the previous two seasons, finishing second in 2011 and winning the event in 2012.  Satterfield is the second freshman (Mary Ellen Gordon in 2000) in Emory history to reach the singles finals of the event, and the fourth Eagle (Gordon in 2000, 2001, and 2002, Joyln Taylor in 2003 and Clark in 2011 and 2012) to play for the singles championship.

Should Satterfield win the Division III on Saturday, she will advance to the 'Super Bowl' on Saturday and Sunday, where she will face the winners of the Division II, NAIA and Junior College draws.

Freshman Melissa Goodman was also in action in the singles draw on Friday, falling in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to Andrea Madrigal of the University of La Verne in the consolation bracket.  Goodman will face Cristina Nunez of Ithaca College in the seventh-place match at 9:45 AM on Saturday.

In doubles action, Satterfield teamed with junior Rebecca Siegler to finish third in the draw.  After the fourth-seeded duo lost their semifinal match to top-seeded Sonja Meighan and Patricia Kirklan of Washington and Lee University (6-4, 6-3), they bounced back to win the third-place match, 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Sammy Chao and Lea Lynn Yen of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.  Emory's duo now stands at 6-1 for the season.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Emory squad was in action at the Southern Shootout on Friday, taking part in the first day of the three-day event, hosted by Georgia State University in Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GA.  Highlights include a singles win for sophomore Stephanie Loutsenko over the University of Louisiana – Monroe's Angela Tejedor, 6-3, 6-3, and a doubles victory for senior Brenna Kelly and sophomore Madison Gordon over the University of Tennessee – Chattahoochee's Kaylene Chadwell and CC Mulyadi, 8-7 (5).

Action at both the Southern Shootout and the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals will continue on Saturday.
