Second-Ranked Emory Wins Two Matches by Shutout on Saturday

The Emory University Women's Tennis Team, ranked second in Division III, improved to 8-0 with a pair of shutouts on Saturday, defeating Division II Clayton State University 9-0 in Morrow, GA, followed by a 9-0 home win over Meredith College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

Emory had the early advantage on Clayton State, which was playing a player short, and was forced to forfeit the third doubles and sixth singles matches.  Emory went on to sweep the remaining two doubles matches, with senior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Melissa Goodman claiming an 8-1 victory at first doubles, and freshman Michelle Satterfield and senior Brenna Kelly winning 9-8(5) at second doubles.

The Eagles would win all five singles matches in straight sets, paced by a 6-0, 6-0 win from Clark at first singles.  Other winners for Emory included Satterfield at second singles (6-4, 6-4), Goodman at third singles (6-0, 6-2), sophomore Madison Gordon at fourth singles (6-0, 6-2) and freshman Katarina Su at fifth singles (6-2, 6-4).

Clayton State dropped to 1-10 on the year with the loss.

It was a similar story for Emory against Meredith, with the Eagles sweeping through all three doubles matches.  Junior Rebecca Siegler and sophomore Beatrice Rosen claimed an 8-3 victory at first doubles, while freshman Bruna Correa and junior Danielle Truitt won 8-2 at second doubles, and freshman Michelle DeMeo and sophomore Stephanie Loutsenko earned an 8-0 win at third doubles.

Four Eagles recorded perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores in singles play, including Rosen at first singles, Loutsenko at third singles, Correa at fifth singles and junior Allie Damico at sixth singles.  Not far behind was sophomore Marissa Levine, who won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles, while junior Catharine Harris won her second singles match 6-3, 6-1.

Meredith, which defeated LaGrange earlier in the day, fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, hosting Millsaps College at 10:00 AM, followed by a 3:30 PM match against Georgia Perimeter College.
