#2 Eagles Defeat NAIA #1 Georgia Gwinnett 6-3

The Emory University Women's Tennis team, ranked second in Division III, defeated Georgia Gwinnett College, the top-ranked NAIA squad, for the second time this season, as the Eagles claimed a 6-3 win over the Grizzlies in Lawrenceville, Georgia on Monday night.

Emory will now head into next weekend's University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Altamonte Springs, Florida with an overall record of 20-2, and as the winner of each of its last eight matches.  The Eagles are undefeated against Division III opponents this season, and are just four wins shy of the program record for victories in a season, set in both 2003 and 2004.

Emory was forced to come from behind in the match after dropping two of the three doubles contests on Monday.  The Eagles' lone doubles win came from the third match, where sophomore Beatrice Rosen and junior Rebecca Siegler claimed an 8-2 win.  At first doubles, senior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Michelle Satterfield suffered an 8-5 setback to the second-ranked squad in the NAIA, while senior Brenna Kelly and freshman Katarina Su dropped an 8-4 decision at second doubles.

However, the Eagles bounced back strong in singles action, with wins in each of the top-five matches.  Clark defeated Valeria Podda, the third-ranked NAIA player, in the first singles match, 6-3, 6-2.  At second singles, Rosen defeated 21st-ranked Judith van Fraaijenhoven 6-1, 6-0, while freshman Melissa Goodman earned a thrilling 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (1) win over Paloma Cortina, ranked 24th in the NAIA.   Rounding out the win, sophomore Madison Gordon claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at fourth singles, while Su defeated her fifth singles opponent 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Su has now won 21-consecutive singles matches, improving to 23-1 overall for the campaign, including a perfect 15-0 record in the spring.

The Eagles lone singles setback came in the sixth match, where freshman Michelle DeMeo dropped a 6-2, 6-0 contest.

Georgia Gwinnett dropped to 13-3 on the season with the loss, with two of their three losses coming against Emory.  Monday's setback was the first home loss of the year for the Grizzlies.

Also on Monday, the Eagles learned they will be the top seeded team at the 2014 UAA Championships, and will take on eighth-seeded New York University at 9:00 AM on Friday, April 25th.  Should the Eagles win, they will face the winner of the first-round match between fourth-seeded and nationally 12th-ranked Chicago and fifth-seeded and 22nd-ranked Brandeis on Saturday, April 26th at 2:00 PM.  On the other side of the draw, second-seeded and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon will play seventh-seeded Rochester and third-seeded and ninth-ranked Washington University (Mo.) will play sixth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Case Western Reserve.  The UAA Championship match will be on Sunday, April 27th at 9:00 AM.
