Emory Women's Tennis Closes Out Wofford Invitational to Conclude Fall Season

The Emory Women's Tennis team wrapped up play on Saturday at the Wofford Invitational, claiming three draw wins in singles and another draw victory in doubles.

The two-day invitational was played on the campuses of Wofford University and USC Upstate and featured players from Savannah State, Gardner-Webb, Virginia Tech, Bluefield College, Radford, USC Upstate, Georgia Southern, East Tennessee State, UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina, Arkansas State and Wofford.

Capturing singles titles for the Eagles on Saturday were senior Bridget Harding and freshmen Defne Olcay and Katie Chang. Harding defeated Virginia Tech's Nancy Ghanem 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the Wofford draw final. In the SoCon final, Olcay ousted Wofford's Curran Carver in straight sets 7-6 (0), 6-2 and in the Conquer championship match, Cheng took down Gardner-Webb's Claire Chase 6-1, 6-4.

Emory was crowned co-champs in the white doubles draw as both doubles teams reached the title match. Sophomore Emma Perelman and freshman Sasha Hartje defeated Wofford's Mayfield/Carver 6-3 and Chang and sophomore Elaine Vernoff blanked Radford's Acierto/Fraser, 6-0.

Other notables from Saturday include freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico winning her third place match in the top singles draw, besting Radford's Lotti Meszaros 6-2, 6-1; junior Daniela Lopez reached the finals in her singles draw on Friday but fell to Wofford's Jenna Vroman 6-1, 1-6, 11-9 to finish second; and Hartje earning fifth place in the Terrier singles draw, downing Bluefield College's Paloma Sanchez 6-2, 6-4.

In doubles, Harding and Gonzalez-Rico reached the title match in the top doubles flight following a 7-6 (1) victory over Alabama State's Detlava/Masdevall but fell to ETSU's Ma/Esguerra 6-4 in the finals. Senior Anna Fuhr and freshman Stephanie Taylor also reached the title match in their doubles bracket with a 7-5 win over Gardner-Webb's Naupari/Ristic but were upended by Radford's Dzeubou/Blalock 6-3 in the finals.

The Eagles will return to action in February when the spring season gets underway on February 10th, when Emory hosts Division I's Georgia State University, beginning at 10:00 AM from the Woodruff PE Center.
