Eagles Fall to Capital 6-5 in 11 Innings

Eagles Fall to Capital 6-5 in 11 Innings

Emory University scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings against Capital University, but could not pull out the victory, losing 6-5 in 11 innings.

The Eagles were outhit by Capital 11-7 in the game.  Emory fell to 8-5 on the season with the loss, while Capital improved to 2-5 with the win.

Emory took an early 3-0 lead over Capital, scoring two in the bottom of the first off a bases-loaded walk to Jay Page and a RBI fielder's choice for Patrick Riebsame.  The Eagles added on a third run in second inning on a Ryan Jones sacrifice fly.

Capital would begin their comeback in the third inning, using a two-out rally to score its first run of the game.  The Crusaders added a second run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, taking a 4-3 lead over the Eagles.  They capped off their scoring in regulation with a run in the top of the eighth, as Emory would face a 5-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Jonathan Reilly started the Eagles' ninth inning with a base hit, followed by a walk to Jared Welch.  After Maxim Sankey's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Brandon Hannon picked up his second bunt single of the game, scoring Reilly from third base.  Then, with Jones at the plate, Hannon drew a pickoff attempt from the catcher at first base, but the throw got away from the first baseman, allowing Welch to score from third.  The Eagles would load the bases with two outs in the ninth, but could not push the go ahead run across.

After both sides worked quick 10th innings, Emory closer Mike Bitanga retired the first two batters in the 11th, but allowed a double and a base hit in consecutive at bats to score the eventual game-winning run.  The Eagles were retired in order in the bottom of the innings to end the game.

Bitanga took the loss for Emory, falling to 0-1 on the season, while Michael Flegal improved to 1-0 with the win for Capital.  Starter Ben Hinojosa pitched six innings for the Eagles, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks. Freshman Matt McMahon added three innings of relief for Emory, giving up one run on three hits.

Hannon finished the day three-for-five at the plate with a run, a RBI and two stolen bases, as the freshman's average rose to .514 this season.

Emory will look to rebound from the loss on Sunday, as the Eagles will host Case Western Reserve University at 12:00 PM, in their final contest before the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament.
