Eagles win High-Scoring Affair against Oglethorpe, 13-9

The Emory University baseball team emerged from a high-scoring game at Oglethorpe University with a victory, defeating the Stormy Petrels 13-9 on Tuesday night.

After both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings, the Eagles broke through with a four run third inning.  Andrew DeYoung started the inning with a single and stole second, later advancing to third on Brandon Hannon's groundout. After Andrew Cohn walked, Kevin O'Connor singled in the first run of the game.  A batter later, Patrick Riebsame hit his third home run in the last two games, a three-run shot that put the Eagles on top 4-0.

The home run was the team-leading seventh of the season for Riebsame, giving him the 10th-most in a single season by an Eagle, and moving him into a tie for 11th-place on the school's ledger with 12 career long balls.  His seven home runs this season are the most by an Eagle in a season since Steve Bralver hit seven during the 2009 campaign.

Oglethorpe answered back in the bottom of the third against Emory starter Paul Schwendel, scoring two runs despite not registering a hit.  However, the Eagles would score again in the fourth, as O'Connor picked up his second RBI single in as many innings, scoring Hannon to bring the score to 5-2.

The Stormy Petrels responded again in the bottom of the fourth.  After Schwendel got two quick outs in the inning, Matthew Cornwell singled to second base, and Brendan Pilger followed with a home run to pull within a run, 5-4.

The Eagles once again extended their lead in the fifth with their second four-run inning of the contest, scoring on a two-RBI single from Hannon and a two RBI bunt single from Cohn.  But, the Petrels put up five more runs in the fifth, knotting the game at 9-9.

Emory took the lead for good in the sixth, as Daniel Iturrey drove in a run with an RBI groundout, scoring Riebsame from third base.  Ryan Jones followed with a two-out triple, and was driven in by a Jared Welch single, to give the Eagles an 11-0 lead.

Freshman Matt McMahon entered the game in relief for Schwendel with two outs in the fifth, and would go on to pitch the next four and a third innings, allowing two hits while striking out three and walking just one.

The Eagles added runs in the ninth on a wild pitch that scored Welch, and a sacrifice fly from O'Connor that brought home Hannon, giving the Eagles a 13-9 lead.

McMahon earned the victory for Emory to improve to 4-2 on the season, and lowered his season ERA to a team-best 2.42.  DeYoung led all Eagles with three hits in the game, while Riebsame and O'Connor each drove in three runs, and Cohn and Hannon had a pair of RBIs apiece.  The Eagles finished the game with 14 hits and nine walks as a team.

Emory has now won nine of its last 12 games, improving to 24-12 on the season, while Oglethorpe dropped to 16-15 on the year with the loss.  The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, returning to Chappell Park to host the University of the South (Sewanee) at 3:00 PM.
