Men's Golf Earns Six All-Region Nods; Klutznick Named First Team All-American & Jack Nicklaus Award Finalist

The Emory University men's golf team had six golfers named to the All-Region team including junior Jackson Klutznick who was named a finalist for the 2022 DIII Jack Nicklaus Award and a First Team All-American chosen by GCAA/PING. The selections were announced last week in conjunction with the NCAA Championships in Orlando, FL.

Klutznick was named as one of five finalists for the Jack Nicklaus Award as announced Tuesday evening which is presented to the national player of the year in each collegiate division. Klutznick was honored as a finalist along with Nicholas Gianelos of Babson, Will Hocker of Webster, Cooper Hrabak of Methodist and William Knauth of Carnegie Mellon. The winner will be announced on June 5th at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, and presented by award namesake Jack Nicklaus during the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. Klutznick also became the fifth Eagle in program history to earn a First Team All-American selection for his performance this season. Klutznick was one of nine golfers named an All-American late last week. 

Along with being named a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award and First Team All-American, Klutznick was one of six Eagles to garner All-Region recognition along with seniors Max Schwarz, Logan Ryan, Davis Hingtgen and freshmen Tony Li and Josh Qian.

Klutznick was phenomenal for the Eagles all season, placing in the top 12 in five of the six tournaments he partook in all while averaging a program record 71 strokes per round over 21 rounds. Klutznick won two tournaments as an individual this season: the Chick-fil-A Invitational in the fall and the Emory Invitational in April. Posting four rounds with a score of 67 or lower, Klutznick set the school record with a low round of 64 in the second round of the DIII Golfweek Invitational and had three other scores that place in the top 10 in program history. Klutznick helped the Eagles to their best performance at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships since 2013 with his four-round score of 298 which tied for the leading score for the Eagles. Klutznick paced the Eagles in scoring in five of the six tournaments he participated in and placed second for Emory at the Jekyll Island Collegiate.

Schwarz was named to the All-Region team for the third consecutive year for his tremendous showing for the No. 2 ranked Eagles this season. Heading into the NCAA Championships, Schwarz is tied for second on the team with a scoring average of 72.89 strokes per round which is the third best scoring average in program history. Competing in a team-high ten tournaments, Schwarz finished in the top ten in four of them which tied for the team lead. Schwarz established his career best round at the Emory Invitational where he scored a 68 in the third round that helped him finish in third place overall. Registering a second place tie at the Tartan Invitational, Schwarz led the team in scoring with a three-round total of 219 (71-73-75). Schwarz finished with a 72-hole total of 300 (75-76-75-74) that helped finish just two strokes off the team lead and tied for 32nd at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships in May.

Ryan earned his third career All-Region selection as he served as a rock-solid presence for the Eagles as a senior. Ryan closed out the season with a scoring average of 73 strokes per round which he compiled over 27 rounds of action. Ryan played a pivotal role in helping the Eagles earn their fifth consecutive UAA Championship with a 3 & 2 victory at the 1 spot over NYU. He also tied for the team lead with a score of 298 (74-78-70-76) at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships. Competing at the DIII Golfweek Invitational, Ryan carded a score of 210 (71-71-68) that saw him finish fourth and his third round score of 68 marked a season-low. Ryan also became the first Eagle since 2019 to earn four consecutive All-UAA nods.

Hingtgen earned his second consecutive All-Region nod for the Eagles as a consistent member of the Eagles rotation. Hingtgen averaged an impressive 74.2 strokes per round in 27 rounds played this season. Competing at the NCAA DIII Fall Preview, Hingtgen recorded his best tournament of the season posting a three-round score of 212 to finish tied for sixth and his third round score of 69 marked his season best score. Finishing in third for the Eagles at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships, Hingtgen registered a score of 299 (75-76-76-72) to help the Eagles to a fifth place national finish. Hingtgen's only other top ten performance of the season came at the Tartan Invitational where he posted a 227 (78-74-75) to finish tied for seventh and in second for the Eagles.

Li earned his first All-Region nod and early last week became the third freshman in program history to be named UAA Rookie of the Year. Li finished the season with the sixth best scoring average in a season and best ever by a freshman in program history with an average of 72.5 strokes per round that he accumulated over 20 rounds played which is the best mark by a freshman in program history. Competing in the finals against NYU at the UAA Championships, Li secured a 4 & 3 victory at the number two spot to help the Eagles win their fifth consecutive conference title. Li recorded three top ten finishes in the seven tournaments he competed in this season. Competing at the Chick-fil-A Invitational, Li posted his best performance of the season finishing in fifth place and his first round score of 68 marked his personal best and tied for the fifth best single round score in program history. Li finished just three strokes off the team lead as he accumulated a score of 301 (76-75-77-73) over 72-holes at the NCAA DIII Golf Championships.

Qian, along with Li, was one of two freshmen named to the All-Region team for the Eagles. Competing in 17 total rounds, Qian averaged an impressive 74.6 strokes per round in 17 total rounds played. Qian posted his season best round during the second round of the NCAA DIII Fall Preview when he scored a 68 which helped him to finish tied for 19th. Qian's highest finish of the season where his score of 145 (73-72) earned him an eleventh place tie at the Chick-fil-A Invitational.
