Emory Men's Basketball Tops Chicago

Emory Men's Basketball Tops Chicago

The senior tandem of Alex Greven and Michael Friedberg each scored 17 points to lead a five-player double-figure scoring attack as the Emory men's basketball team recorded a Sunday afternoon win at the University of Chicago.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 15-6, 7-4 in the University Athletic Association, following an 82-59 win over the Maroons who fell to 10-12, 4-7 in the league.

Greven hit seven-of-eight from the floor, including three-of-four from beyond the arc,  in recording his 19th double-figure scoring effort of the season.  Friedberg was successful on six-of-13 from the field and also knocked down a season-high three treys in posting his 15th double-digit scoring performance of the season.   Junior McPherson Moore totaled 13 points in the triumph while sophomore Michael Florin and junior Jake Davis each contributed 12 points.

Emory ended the game shooting 50.8 percent from the floor (32-of-63) while the host Maroons checked in at 39.7 percent.   The Eagles hit on 56.6 percent (15-of-27) of their field goal tries over the final 20 minutes compared to UC's 29.4 percent (10-of-34) en route to a 42-29 scoring advantage.   Emory turned the ball over a season-low five times and finished with a 20-2 edge in the points off turnover department with UC finishing with 13 miscues.

Chicago whittled a 10-point halftime deficit to five points early in the second half before Emory regrouped to rattle off a 14-5 run that pushed its lead back to 14 points, 56-42, with 12:45 left in the game.   Greven started the run with a basket followed by a triple while four other Eagles came through with points.   Holding a 61-49 cushion,  Friedberg sank back-to-back treys and Davis added a bucket as part of an 8-2 spurt that extended Emory's lead to 18 points, 69-51, with 8:08 on the clock.  The Maroons cut their deficit to 13 points but Emory sealed the outcome with an 11-1 blitz, that saw Greven score five points, in building an 80-57 margin with 3:57 remaining.

Emory scored the game's first nine points with Davis, Moore and Greven all sinking three pointers over the first 2:18 of the opening half.  After a basket by UC's Sam Cage cut Emory's lead to 11-6, the Eagles bombarded the home team with a 16-0 charge with Davis scoring five points, and a total of six players finding their way into the scoring column, to claim a 27-6 cushion with 9:39 left in the stanza.  At that point of the game, Emory had turned UC over on nine occasions while limiting it to just 3-of-12 from the floor.  A jumper by Friedberg enabled Emory to retain an 18-point lead, 34-16, with 5:33 on the clock but UC closed out the half on a 14-6 run that cut the Eagles' margin to 40-30 heading into halftime.  Emory shot 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of action and enjoyed a balanced scoring attack that saw Moore and Davis each total eight points while Greven chipped in seven points.   After a slow start from the field, the Maroons converted 10 of their final 12 shot attempts to close out the half at 54.2 percent (13-of-24).

Emory returns to action on Friday (Feb. 15) when it hosts Case Western.
