Emory Men’s Basketball Defeats Carnegie Mellon 84-61; To Play for UAA Title Next Week

The Emory University men's basketball team will play for a share of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship next Saturday, after a resounding 84-61 victory over Carnegie Mellon University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Sunday afternoon.

With just one game remaining in the conference schedule for the Eagles, Emory sits in a tie for second with Washington University (Mo.) with a 9-4 record in UAA games.  The Eagles are one game back of sixth-ranked Rochester (10-3 in UAA play), which lost at home to Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.

Emory will host Rochester on Saturday, February 23rd at 4:00 PM in their regular-season finale, and can force a tie atop the conference standings with a victory.  The Eagles have not won a UAA Championship since the 1989-90 season.

Senior Alex Greven led all players with 26 points, matching his season-high set earlier in the weekend.  Greven shot eight-for-11 from the field, including six-for-nine from long range for the second game in a row.  Junior Jake Davis added 15 points, while sophomore Michael Florin rounded out the Eagles' double-digit scorers with 10 points and eight assists.

As a team, Emory shot 50 percent from the field for the game on a 31-of-62 effort, including a 10-of-21 performance on three-point shots.  Meanwhile, Emory limited the Tartans to just 37.9 % (22-for-58) shooting during the day.

The Eagles got off to a quick start against the Tartans, jumping out to a 22-6 lead in the game.  Emory converted on seven of its first 12 shots from the field, including four of its first six three-point attempts, while holding the Tartans to just two-of-13 from the field for the first 10 minutes of play, with both shots being three-pointers by Asad Meghani.

Emory would build increase its lead to as much as 19 points in the first half on a Greven three-pointer with 6:19 left to play in the first stanza, and again on a tip-in by freshman Will Trawick with 53 seconds left in the half.  The Eagles closed the first half with a 44-29 advantage behind 13 points from Greven, who went four-for-five from the field in the first 20 minutes, including a three-for-four performance from long range.  Senior Michael Friedberg added nine first-half points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Emory's success continued into the second half, never allowing the Tartans to pull closer than 13 points.  The Eagles continued building their lead, taking their largest advantage of the game with 47 seconds left, when freshman Stephen Simmons gave Emory a 25-point lead with a steal and a layup.

Meghani led all Carnegie players with 22 points in the game, while Rob Mohen chipped in 10 for the Tartans.

With just two games remaining in the Eagles' season, Emory stands at 17-6 overall, while Carnegie Mellon dropped to 5-19 on the season, included a 2-11 mark in conference play.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00 PM, hosting Covenant College in a non-conference match-up, before its season-finale against sixth-ranked Rochester at the WoodPEC next Saturday.
