Emory Men's Basketball Rolls By Rochester -- Earns UAA Co-Championship

Senior Alex Greven led three double-figure scorers with 14 points and the Emory men's basketball team turned in a suffocating defensive performance Saturday afternoon in earning a victory over No. 13 Rochester, 72-54.  The win today enabled Emory to share for the University Athletic Association championship with Rochester and Washington University, the first time since 1990 that an Eagle team had captured a conference crown.  Emory now stands 19-6 overall and finished the league portion of its schedule with a 10-4 mark while Rochester slipped to 21-4 overall.

Emory ended the game shooting 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from floor and held Rochester to 32.1 percent (17-of-53).  The Eagles' defensive presence held the Yellowjackets to 20 points less than their season average and far under the 47.5 percent field goal percentage showing they had entering the game.

Included in Greven's offensive totals were three three-point  fields goals, running his streak to 39 games of at least one trey.  Sophomore Michael Florin turned in a solid effort at both ends of the floor, picking up 11 points, dishing out 10 assists, his second effort of double figures in that category this season, and recording a season-high tying four steals. Rounding out the team's double-figure scorers was junior McPherson Moore with 11 points.  Michael Friedberg led the team's rebounding effort for the seventh straight contest with a game-high tying 10 rebounds, his fifth contest this season of double figures in that category.

With the game tied at 16-16 with 8:08 left in the opening half, the Eagles rattled off a 9-2 spurt, capped by a Friedberg triple to take a 25-18 advantage.  Emory maintained its seven-point margin late into the stanza until a bucket by freshman Will Trawick, followed by three-pointer by Greven, put the Eagles up by a dozen points, 32-20, going into the intermission.

Emory scored seven of the first ten points to start the second half in taking a commanding 16-point lead, 39-23, with 16:50 on the clock.   The closest Rochester would get the remainder of the game would be 10 points, the final time coming with 14:08 remaining.   A 10-2 Emory burst that saw Moore score four points and Trawick hit a triple, extended the Eagles' cushion to 19 points, 55-36, with 7:44 left with the home squad leading by as many as 21 points in the late stages of the game.

Prior to the game Senior Day ceremonies were conducted recognizing the contributions of Ollie Carleton, Nash Oh, Michael Friedberg and Alex Greven.

Emory will wait to learn its NCAA Tournament fate with the announcement slated for 12:30 pm on Monday, Feb. 25, on ncaa.com.  Through a tie-breaking formula, Washington University will earn the league's automatic bid to the postseason.
