Emory Men's Basketball Team Drops NCAA D-III Second-Round Game At Whitworth -- Closes Out Year At 20-7

Junior Jake Davis and senior Alex Greven combined for 38 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory men's basketball team dropped a NCAA Division III Tournament second-round game at Whitworth University Saturday evening.  The Eagles closed out their year with an overall record of 20-7 following an 86-67 setback to the No. 6-ranked Pirates who boosted their won-lost ledger to 26-3.  Whitworth advances to next Saturday's third round against Mary Hardin Baylor.

Emory fell victim to a hot-shooting Whitworth squad that ended the evening connecting on 53.3 percent of its field goal attempts (25-of-47) including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from beyond the arc.  The Eagles ended the contest successful on 44.6 percent (25-of-56) of their field goal tries but converted just 18.2 percent (2-of-11) of their triple tries.

Whitworth was led in scoring by junior Colton McCargar who paced all players with 26 points, hitting 10-of-14 from the field and six-of-nine from beyond the arc.  Junior Dustin McConnell chipped in 17 points for the Pirates that included a 12-for-12 performance at the charity stripe.

Trailing by 12 points coming out of halftime,  Emory saw the host squad post a 12-3 blitz over the opening 4:38 of the second half in taking a 54-33 lead.  Emory battled to whittle away at the imposing deficit but still trailed by a 63-43 margin with 11:25 remaining on the clock.   A pair of three pointers by Greven and two buckets by Michael Florin keyed a 10-2 Emory run that drew the Eagles to within 12 points with 7:51 on the clock.  The Eagles stayed within striking range and when Davis sank back-to-back baskets, Emory was down by only 10 points, 71-61, with 5:10 left.  However, Whitworth rattled off nine straight points, the first four coming on one possession when it was awarded two foul shots and then two more on a subsequent Emory technical foul, followed by a McCargar triple, and then two more foul shots, to claim an 80-61 cushion with 4:26 left and effectively ending the Eagles' comeback bid.

Davis, who scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half of action, ended the night hitting nine-of-17 from the field and four-of-six from the line in registering his 23rd double-figure scoring effort of the year and 12th of 20 or more points.  Greven, who played in his final collegiate game, chipped in 16 points on five-of-11 field goal shooting along with a 4-for-4 showing at the stripe.  Greven closed out his career in the No. 6 spot on the school's all-time lists in both scoring (1,268 pts.)  and three-point field goals (162).   Sophomore Michael Florin logged 39 minutes of action and tallied nine points while doling out eight assists, raising his season total to 158, the third-highest mark in school history.   In addition to Greven, other seniors suiting up for the final time as Eagles included Michael Friedberg, Nash Oh and Ollie Carleton.  Friedberg scored six points and his two blocked shots on the night closed out his school-record career total at 190.

Playing before an enthusiastic sellout crowd of 1,745 fans, Whitworth came out firing, hitting 10 of its first 12 field goals, including four-of-five from three-point range in bolting to a 28-10 lead with 9:50 left in the first half.   McCargar scored seven of his 18 first-half points in that stretch, closing out the stanza by sinking all seven of his field goal tries including all four of his three-point attempts.  A triple by McCargar closed out a 22-6 Whitworth stretch, giving the home squad its largest lead of the opening stanza, 31-12, with 7:42 on the clock.   Four points apiece by Davis and Alex Geven accounted for an 8-2 Emory spurt that cut its deficit to 14 points, but a bucket by McCargar followed by a pair of free throws by Mack Larkin built Whitworth's lead back to 18 points with 3:38 left.   However, the Eagles closed out the half in strong fashion, outpointing the Pirates by a 10-4 count, with Davis scoring eight points in that run, to draw to within 12 points, 42-30, at the break.   Emory connected on 48 percent (12-of-25) from the floor while Whitworth went into the break sinking 57.7 percent (15-of-26) including six-of-10 from downtown.
