The Emory University Men's Soccer team used a three-goal first half to push past Dickinson College, 3-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday evening in Lynchburg, VA.

The Eagles advance to face host Lynchburg College Sunday afternoon, beginning at 4:00 PM. The Hornets reached the second round on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Penn State-Abington.

Seniors Jason McCartney and Christian Meyer provided the scoring, staking Emory to a three-goal advantage within the opening 34 minutes of the match. McCartney registered his fifth multi-goal game of the season and Meyer netted his fifth goal of the year, tying his single-season career-high.

Emory was aggressive from the get-go, recording 10 shots in the opening 45 with six on frame. Junior Moustafa Khattab had the Eagles first scoring threat in the ninth minute with a shot from inside the 18 but was denied on a diving save by Dickinson's Frederick Meagher. Meyer collected the rebound and put a shot on target but was also stopped by Meagher.

Seven minutes later, McCartney notched the first of his two tallies. Junior Aidan Datené fed a pass inside the 18 to McCartney, who spun around a defender and fired a shot to the far post. The shot drilled the post and across the end line to put Emory on the scoreboard.

Meyer increased the Eagles lead shortly after in the 22^nd minute. Meyer worked through a couple Red Devil defenders before blasting a shot to the upper right corner, freezing Meagher in the process.

In the 34^th minute, McCartney made it 3-0 with a score from inside the six. The goal was originally discounted by an offsides call but the head referee overruled the side judge to give McCartney his 13^th marker in 2017.

Dickinson had its first scoring opportunity in the 48^th minute as Will Bracken had a shot on target but was turned away by a great diving save from freshman Cole Gallagher. The rookie finished the contest with five saves to improve to 9-4-1.

The Eagles held off a late charge by the Red Devils with Brendan McGovern cutting the lead to 3-1 with a score in the 68^th minute. Dickinson almost pulled to within one in the 84^th but sophomore William Jones made a miraculous stop on the goal line to preserve the two-goal edge. Two minute later, Colin Fager appeared to have made the score 3-2 with DC's last real scoring chance but was deemed offsides, negating the goal.

Emory upped its season record to 13-5-1 overall while Dickinson wraps up its season at 11-7-3.
