Eagles Sweep Darton & W. Florida on ‘Senior Day’

Emory University turned in another solid performance in dual meet action on Saturday, as the Eagles swept opponents Darton College and the University of West Florida in the team's final home dual meet of the 2014-15 season.

The Emory men claimed a 119-87 win over Darton, while the women earned victories of 130.5-103.5 over West Florida (ranked 14th in Division II) and 154-34 over Darton.  Also on the women's side of the meet, West Florida defeated Darton 210-18.

Saturday also marked the final career home dual meet for Emory's 13 graduating team members - Hayden Baker, James Davis, Kevin Flood, Cameron Herting, Griffin Neville, Eric Ruggieri, Megan Beach, Dana Holt, Nancy Larson, McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg, Lexi Tutor, Michelle York and Nina Zook.  They were honored in a special 'Senior Day' ceremony prior to the start of the meet.

Together, Emory's senior class has contributed to the program's success over the past four years, winning six University Athletic Association Championships, with the women going on to claim three-straight NCAA Division III Championships, and the men finishing in the top-five nationally all three years.

Emory's seniors went on to pick up wins in three individual events at the meet.  For the women, Larson claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.53 seconds, while Newsum-Schoenberg won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:03.01.  Larson was also a part of a pair of winning relays, joining freshmen Cindy Cheng, junior Elizabeth Aronoff, and sophomore Kristine Rosenberger on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.67) and sophomore Claire Liu, sophomore Marissa Bergh and freshman Ming Ong on the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:37.09).

For the men's senior class, Hayden Baker won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.53 seconds, and along with Ruggieri, was a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay, in addition to sophomore Mitchell Cooper and freshman Oliver Smith (1:33.38).

The Emory men claimed wins in each of the 11 swimming events.  Junior Andrew Wilson recorded the team's lone 'B' cut time, en route to winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 55.77 seconds.  Cooper earned a pair of individual victories, finishing first in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.01) and the 100-yard backstroke (51.76).  Other individual first-place finishers included freshman Henry Copses in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:54.79), junior Eagan Zettlemoyer in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.92), Smith in the 50-yard freestyle (21.09 seconds), sophomore Hayes Burdette-Sapp in the 100-yard freestyle (47.61 seconds), and sophomore Christian Baker in the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.16), while the Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay of Smith, freshman Wes Duke, freshman Alexander Hardwick and Burdette-Sapp rounded out the meet with a win in a time of 1:25.00.

The women would claim 11 events wins of their own.  First-place finishes in addition to those recorded by seniors came from freshman Rebecca Upton in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:27.34), Cheng in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.34), Liu in the 50-yard freestyle (24.17 seconds), freshman Megan Campbell in the 100-yard butterfly (58.34 seconds), junior Ellie Thompson in the 100-yard backstroke (58.53 seconds), and sophomore Annelise Kowalsky in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.84).

In addition, junior diver Kellen Hope turned in a pair of strong performances, surpassing NCAA qualifying standards in each of the events she competed in at the meet.  Hope won the one-meter dive with a score of 264.90, and placed second in the three-meter dive with a mark of 268.35.

With the wins, the Emory men improved to 3-2 on the year, while the women raised their dual meet record to 7-0.  For the visitors, the Darton men and women dropped to 1-2 and 0-2, respectively, while West Florida moved to 9-3 with the split.

The Eagles will take part in their final dual meets of the season next weekend, when the Eagles split the squad between a pair of road meets on Saturday, January 31st.  Part of the team will head to Athens, Georgia to face the University of Georgia (which features the top-ranked women's team and second-ranked men's team in Division I) at 12:00 pm ET, while the rest of the squad travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to face the University of the South at 1:00 pm CT.
