2014-15 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

2014-15 Emory Men’s Swimming & Diving Season Recap

Led by CSCAA Swimmer of the Year Andrew Wilson, the Emory University men's swimming and diving team finished fourth at the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

Wilson turned in one of the best swims in the history of the meet, winning National Championships in three events – the 100-yard breaststroke (51.72 seconds), 200-yard breaststroke (1:52.97) and 200-yard individual medley (1:46.23) – setting new NCAA Division III records in each.  In addition, his 100-yard breaststroke time ranked as the ninth fastest ever by an American in the event, while 200-yard breaststroke time was the 13th fastest mark in the world.  Wilson also joined with sophomore Mitchell Cooper, senior Hayden Baker and freshman Oliver Smith to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.96) and with Cooper, Baker and freshman Alexander Hardwick to claim second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:13.55), each in a school record time.

Sophomore Christian Baker added all-America finishes in both the 500-yard freestyle (3rd) and 200-yard freestyle (5th), while junior Eagan Zettlemoyer placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle and junior Jared Scheuer claimed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke to claim all-America certificates of their own.  The Eagles combined to record nine all-America finishes and 12 all-America honorable mentions as a team.

Emory finished the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships with 233 points, finishing fourth in the team standings behind Kenyon (468), Denison (383), and Williams (292).  It marked the 16th-consecutive top-five finish for the program at the national meet.

Earlier in the season, the Eagles claimed their 17th-consecutive University Athletic Association Championship, finishing the meet with 1,551 points to best second-place Chicago (1,408 points) and third-place Washington University (1,296).  Wilson became the eighth Eagle all-time to be named the UAA Swimmer of the Year, after winning and setting conference records in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard individual medley and 400-yard medley relay (along with Cooper, Baker and sophomore Hayes Burdette-Sapp).  Emory finished the meet with 13 individual and two relay all-UAA honors, including first-place finishes in five individual events and one relay.

In other championship-style meets during the season, the Eagles finished fourth out of six teams at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio in December, and won the Emory Invitational in February.

Emory finished the campaign with a 4-3 record in dual meets, with wins over Birmingham-Southern College, the Savannah College of Art and Design, Darton College and the University of the South.  All three of the Eagles' losses came against Division I or II opponents.

The Eagles were also represented by Wilson, senior Eric Ruggieri, Hayden Baker, Christian Baker and Cooper at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin in January.  Wilson led the way with an Olympic Trial qualifying mark and a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, while Hayden Baker placed 24th in the finals of the 100-meter butterfly and 27th in the 200-meter butterfly.  In the 1,500-meter freestyle, Cooper claimed a 22nd-place finish, with Christian Baker finishing 26th in the event, in addition to his 23rd-place finish in the finals of the 200-meter freestyle.

In addition to his success in the pool, Wilson was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for the At-Large Team, becoming just the fifth Emory student-athlete in any sport to ever win the honor, and the second swimmer.
