Kenya Sei & Brett Henshey Reach Podium on First Day of UAA Championships

The Emory University men's indoor track & field team finished the first day of action at the UAA Indoor Championships in Cleveland, OH in fifth place and with two athletes having earned All-UAA honors.

For the men, sophomore Kenya Sei established a new personal record in the weight throw on the way to earning an All-UAA distinction. Sei threw for a distance of 15.58m which saw him finish third at the meet and finish with the fourth farthest distance in program history.

In the high jump event, senior Brett Henshey stepped up big time finishing in a tie for second place clearing a distance of 1.89m and securing a spot on the podium in the process. Henshey's placement was the biggest point earner for the Eagles on the day, drawing seven points for Emory.

In the track events, the Eagles had nine runners with performances that garnered qualification into the final heats that will take place on Sunday. Graduate student Liam Fost recorded a time of 49.99 in the 400m dash which sees him with the best time of all competitors heading into tomorrow's final. Sophomore Dawit Dean (51.26) and freshman Chris Belz (51.75) will also be appearing in tomorrow's 400m dash final having finished in eighth and 12th, respectively.

Freshmen Jackson Price and Sam Ryba qualified for the finals in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash with Price registering the third fastest time at the meet in the 60m dash at 7.02 seconds, that is also good for a tie for the fifth best time in program history.

Having recently captured the title of program record holder in the 800m run, sophomore Spencer Watry qualified for the finals in the 800m crossing the finish line in 1:55.73. Senior Thomas Perretta and freshman Marcus Cheema also registered times that earned them a trip to tomorrow's 800m run final. Senior Lucas Werner, having registered a time of 8.74 seconds in the 60m hurdle event, will compete in his second-ever indoor final having last qualified during his freshman year in 2019.

The men's distance medley relay team consisting of senior Jacob Hedgepeth, Dean, Watry and senior Jon Marcus finished in fifth with a time of 10:28.90 earning Emory four points. In the other distance final on Saturday, senior Brett Lucas registered a time of 15:04.71 in the 5000m run finishing in tenth place.

The men enter the final day of the UAA Indoor Championships in fifth place having earned 16 total points with five total events scored. Carnegie Mellon stands above the rest with 48 total points while Chicago (36 points) and WashU (34 points) trail close behind.
