Moore & Gibbons Capture UAA Titles on Day One; 4x800 Relay Breaks School Record

The Emory University men's track & field team closed out the first day of action at the UAA Outdoor Championships in St. Louis, Mo in fourth place with nine All-UAA performers.

The Eagles racked up 48 points in the first day of competition which sees them in fourth place with eight total events having been scored thus far. Sitting atop the podium after day one is Carnegie Mellon with 78 points while WashU trails just behind at 77 points. Chicago rounds out the podium with a total of 54 points.

The 4x800 relay team of sophomore Dawit Dean, junior Justin Pecore, freshman Jack Petkash and sophomore Scott Masterson finished in second place to earn All-UAA honors. The team registered a time of 7:41.05 which is the fastest time in program history. Elsewhere on the track, senior Spencer Moore earned a first place finish and All-UAA recognition with his time of 9:18.67 in the 3,000m steeplechase which ties his ninth place in program history time that he set earlier this season.

On the field, graduate student Maxwell Prizant registered a third place finish in the pole vault with a height of 4.50m. Prizant surpassed his personal best and now holds the fourth highest result in program history. Junior David Gibbons (51.72m) narrowly edged out teammate Chris Jernigan (51.71m) as they finished in first and second place, respectively, in the javelin throw to each earn an All-UAA accolade. The final All-UAA performer for the Eagles on Saturday was junior Michael Tiffin who registered a third place finish in the hammer throw after posting a distance of 48.77m.

The Eagles had nine total athletes qualify for Sunday's finals by virtue of their performances in Saturday's preliminary events. Graduate student Liam Fost goes into tomorrow's 400m dash final seeded first having recorded a time of 48.78 in preliminaries. Joining Fost in the 400m dash final are Dean (49.81, 4th seed) and freshman Chris Belz (49.96, 6th seed). Freshman Jackson Price and senior Thomas Davis each qualified for the final in both the 100m dash and 200m dash with Price coming into the 200m dash final seeded second (21.59). Joining Price and Davis in the 200m dash final is freshman Sam Ryba who comes in seeded sixth with a preliminary time of 22.18. Freshman Marcus Cheema comes into the 800m run final on Sunday seeded fifth after crossing the finish line in 1:52.97 in prelims. In the hurdle events, senior Lucas Werner qualified for the 110m hurdle final with a time of 15.76 in prelims while senior Graham Scott qualified for the 400m hurdle final with a time of 56.81.

The Eagles take the field again tomorrow at 10:00 AM in St. Louis, MO for the final day of the UAA Outdoor Championship.
