Track & Field Sets Two School Records at Emory Final Qualifier

The Emory University outdoor track & field team competed in their final regular season meet of the season as a team Wednesday afternoon with hopes of qualifying some more individuals for the NCAA Championships on Memorial Day weekend.

On the track for the men, the 4x100 relay team of freshman Sam Ryba, senior Thomas Davis, graduate student Liam Fost and freshman Jackson Price had a phenomenal day breaking the program record crossing the finish line in 41.14 seconds, surpassing their previous time of 41.27 that they set at the UAA Championships last month. With their new mark the 4x100 relay team now sit at 16th in the nation according to TFRRS with hopes of championship qualification.

Elsewhere on the track, freshman Marcus Cheema placed second in the 800m run, registering a time of 1:52.82 which is the second best mark by an Eagle this season. Sophomore Scott Masterson (1:53.88) and senior Thomas Perretta (1:57.01) also competed in the 800m run. In the sprints, Davis (11.10) represented Emory in the 100m dash, Price (21.84) competed in the 200m dash and freshman Chris Belz (51.33) participated in the 400m dash. Freshman Jack Petkash (4:06.99) placed third in the 1,500m run while sophomore Grant Thompson (10:10.72) was the lone competitor in the 3,000m steeplechase with his time setting a new PR.

On the field for the men, graduate student Maxwell Prizant set the new program record in the pole vault as he cleared a height of 4.71m to win the event, breaking his previous record that he set just this past Saturday of 4.63m. Sophomore Kenya Sei threw a distance of 51.47m in the hammer throw which now stands as the sixth best mark in program history. Junior Michael Tiffin took part in the hammer throw (46.95m) as well as the discus throw (35.15m). In senior Chris Jernigan's final regular season meet with the Eagles he threw a distance of 45.26m in the javelin to place second.

On the track for the women, the 4x100 relay team consisting of sophomore Ella Lavelle, senior Jessica Barbarosh, freshman Dashiel Tao Harris and freshman Kaya Binetti placed second after posting a time of 49.29. Junior Claire Evans registered a third place finish in the 400m hurdles with her time of 1:04.34. Binetti, competing in the 100m dash, qualified for the final with a time of 12.40 that saw her finish sixth. Lavelle (12.62) and Barbarosh (13.43) also competed in the 100m dash. Competing in their third events of the day Binetti (26.08) and Barbarosh (26.77) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200m dash.

On the field for the women, freshman Sarah Fineman recorded a distance of 12.91m in the shot put to finish in second at the meet. Senior Alex Devaux paced the Eagles in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.04m while junior Peyton Rees (38.54m) and senior Oceane De Greef (36.22m) also competed. Junior Hope Jackson (40.54m) recorded a second place finish in the discus throw while De Greef (30.84m) finished in third.

The qualifiers of the NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships will be announced on Friday morning and those who qualify will get a chance to compete at the championships Friday, May 27th through Sunday, May 29 in Geneva, OH.
