2022 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

2022 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

The 2022 men's outdoor track & field team built on a strong outdoor season resulting in student-athletes qualifying for the NCAA DIII Championships in three different events as well as nine All-Region honorees and 13 All-UAA performers.

By virtue of finishing with a top 20 time in the nation, the Eagles had six different athletes qualify for the NCAA DIII Championships across three different events. Senior Spencer Moore competed at the championships in the 3,000m steeplechase where he qualified for the finals and finished in 11th place after posting a time of 9:15.56. For the first time since 2007, Emory qualified both of its men's relay teams for the championships. The 4x400 relay team of sophomore Dawit Dean, senior Thomas Davis, graduate student Liam Fost and freshman Jackson Price registered a 10th place finish with a time of 3:16.19 in their final meet of the season. Davis, Fost, Price and freshman Sam Ryba competed in the 4x100 relay at the championships where they crossed the finish line in 13th place after recording a time of 41.32 seconds.

The Eagles had nine student-athletes named recipients of USTFCCCA All-Region awards with those nine athletes earning 14 total All-Region accolades between them. Price and Fost led the way with three All-Region selections as they both earned a spot for the two nationals qualifying relay teams while Price earned his third in the 200m dash and Fost in the 400m dash. Other All-Region performers were Davis and Ryba in the 4x100 relay, Davis and Dean in the 4x400 relay, Moore in the 3,000m steeplechase, graduate student Maxwell Prizant in the pole vault and sophomore Kenya Sei and junior Michael Tiffin in the hammer throw.

At the UAA Championships, the Eagles improved greatly upon their performance in the winter season ending with 14 All-UAA results and a third place finish overall which was the teams highest finish at the championships since the 2015 season. Davis and Price showed out each bringing home four All-UAA honors which resulted in Davis being named the UAA Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer and Price winning the UAA Men's Rookie of the Year award. Davis became the first Emory track athlete to earn MOTP since 2015 while Price was the third ever Eagle to win the ROY award and first since 2019.

All of the All-Region performers also earned All-UAA acclaim but there were a few other Emory athletes who left their mark on the conference championship. The 4x800 relay team of Dean, junior Justin Pecore, freshman Jack Petkash and sophomore Scott Masterson earned All-UAA honors and in doing so set the school record in the event with a time of 7:41.05. Junior David Gibbons and senior Chris Jernigan earned All-UAA selections for their performance in the javelin throw.

Over the course of the season, the Eagles garnered six UAA Athlete of the Week awards, three on the track and three on the field. Prizant earned two for his performances in the pole vault event while Sei earned one in the hammer throw. Fost and Price each earned one for their individual sprint performances and also earned one together along with Davis and Dean for their performance in the 4x400 relay.

Rounding out awards for men's track & field were the 27 student-athletes named to the Spring UAA All-Academic team which was the most student-athletes amongst all Emory spring sports. Highlighting that list was Moore who was named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for Cross Country/Track & Field along with Fost and was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team which recognizes student-athletes for their accomplishments in athletics as well as academia.
