The Emory  men's and women's cross country teams turned in sterling performances Saturday morning with each squad coming away with first-place finishes at the Gulf Coast Stampede.  The meet was held at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Florida.

The Emory women's team, ranked 23rd nationally, topped the 12-team field with 32 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Jacksonville State's mark of 85 points.  Host West Florida (98 pts.), Alabama State (99 pts.) and Valdosta State (130 pts.) rounded out the top five.   All five of Emory's scorers finished among the top 10 overall performers led by sophomore Stephanie Crane who covered the 5K course in a time of 19:06, good for third place in the 105-runner field.   Sophomore Hannah Moriarty was the next Eagle to cross the finish line with her effort of 19:23 good for the No. 5 spot overall.   The sophomore trio of Marissa Gogniat (19:25), Tamara Surtees (19:28) and Elise Viox (19:29) rounded out the Eagles' scoring effort while taking home the 7-8-9 positions, respectively.  Senior Calley Edwards recorded a 10th-place finish with a performance of 19:30.

The Eagle men chalked up 46 points, tops in the nine-team field.  West Alabama finished in second with 70 points while West Florida's 73 points was good for third.  Jacksonville State (82 pts.) and Valdosta State (129 pts.) rounded out the top five.  Freshman Lukas Mees continued his impressive fall, clocking a team-best 8K time of 26:31, placing him fourth in the 93-runner field.   Mees has ranked as among the team's top two finishers in each of the Emory's three competitions so far this year.  Senior Stephen Ellwood was second among the Emory contingent with his showing of 26:47 seventh overall.  Sophomore Alex Fleischhacker posted a 26:50 that enabled him to claim ninth place.   Other scorers for Emory included junior Hank Ashforth (27:08, 16th) and sophomore Cameron Wheeler (27:12, 17th).

Emory returns to action on Oct. 6 when it competes at the Gibson Family Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, IN.
