Emory Cross Country To Host NCAA Regional Championships

Emory Cross Country To Host NCAA Regional Championships

The Emory University men's and women's cross country teams head into the homestretch of the season on Saturday (Nov. 10) when they host the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships.  This year's competitions will be held at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Ga.  The men's 8K race will begin at 10:00 am (EST) while the women's 6K event is slated for an 11:00 am start.

There are eight regional championships being conducted around the country with the top two men's and women's teams from each regional earning automatic bids to the NCAA National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Terre Haute,  Indiana.  In addition, there will be 16 at-large teams selected for both the men's and women's championships.  Approximately 26 teams and 210 runners will be hitting the course in the men's event while 242 women from 33 programs will take part in this year's Championships.

The Emory women's team has enjoyed considerable success over the years at the NCAA Regionals, logging first-place efforts in 17 of the past 21 seasons.  In 2011, the Eagles topped the 30-team field with 45 points, well ahead of runner-up Rhodes College (86 pts.).   The Eagles saw all five of their scorers finish among the top 15 runners in the 197-runner field including current sophomore Stephanie Crane who crossed the finish line in the No. 8 position, enabling her to earn all-region acclaim.  Classmate Tamra Surtees also garnered all-region recognition after finishing 23rd.   Heading into this weekend's action, Emory  is ranked first in the region while drawing votes in the national poll.

The Emory's men's team posted a third-place finish out of 23 squads at last year's Regional Championships which were hosted by Texas Lutheran.   Lynchburg College took home first place while Centre College was runner-up.  The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the region heading into this weekend, had three runners race to all-region recognition in 2011, including current harriers Stephen Ellwood who crossed the finish line in 10th place out of 174 entries and Alex Fleischhacker who was 32nd.
