NCAA Selection Announcement

After a one-year hiatus, the No. 2-ranked Emory University softball team is back in the NCAA Tournament.  Earlier today, the Eagles found out that they will be the No. 1 seed in the eight-team Salisbury (MD) Regional.

The Eagles’ opening opponent will be No. 8 seed Kean University from the New Jersey Athletic Conference.  Emory and the Cougars will open the Regional on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.  Other opening match-ups on Thursday include No. 4 seed Virginia Wesleyan vs. No. 5 seed Christopher Newport (Noon), host and No. 3 seed Salisbury vs. No. 6 seed Farmingdale State University (2:00 p.m.) and No. 2 seed Rowan University vs. No. 7 seed Shenandoah (4:00 p.m.).  The double-elimination regional will run from Thursday through the regional championship game on Sunday, May 15.  Game times will be 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm on the first three days.

A total of 60 teams were selected to take part in this year’s quest to bring home the national title which was captured by East Texas Baptist in 2010.  A total of 41 conferences received automatic bids while Emory and fellow UAA member Washington University drew Pool B bids which includes
independent institutions and institutions from conferences that do not meet the automatic qualification criteria.  The 17 remaining teams (Pool C) were selected on an at-large basis from automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining institutions in Pool B.

Some notes on the 2011 Emory squad as it enters the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

** Emory has received NCAA Tournament bids in five of the past six seasons and a total of nine times during the 13-year history of the program.

** Head Coach Penny Siqueiros is the only head coach that Emory has had since the Eagles launched play in 1999 and she posts a school and career record of 410-135-1.  She has guided Emory to nine campaigns of 30 or more wins.

** This year’s team posts an overall record of 40-2-1 which represents a school record for most wins during the regular season, bettering the previous mark of 37.

** Emory has outscored the opposition by a 300-82 margin this year with the Eagles’ run total third on the school’s seasonal chart.  The Eagles have scored 10 or more runs on 10 occasions this year.  In addition, this year’s team has established a school mark with 33 home runs, besting the previous standard of 25 set by the 2009 squad.

** Emory opened the year by winning its first 26 contests, registering a 198-27 scoring advantage in that stretch.

** Earlier in the campaign, Emory captured its second straight and fifth University Athletic Association Championship, finishing with an 8-0 record.

** Emory has won its last five and stands 8-2 in one-run games this season.

** The Eagles show an all-time record of 21-11 in NCAA Regional action.  Emory’s last appearance in the regionals came in 2009 when it finished with a 2-2 record at Salisbury.

** Freshman Megan Light, chosen as the UAA’s MVP and Rookie of the Year, leads the team and the league in hitting with a .465 average, currently sixth on the school’s seasonal ladder.  She tops the team with 59 hits (t-9th on school list), 59 RBIs (1st on school list), and 16 doubles (t-4th on school ladder).  She has a team-high 19 multi-hit games and has driven in two or more runs a club-leading 16 times

** Junior outfielder Jessica Thomas, named Co-MVP of the UAA Tournament with teammate Bridget Holloway, has hammered a school record 11 homers this year.  Thomas, a First Team All-UAA honoree, has a dozen multi-hit outings and 14 multiple-RBI performances.  She is the school’s all-time leader with 23 round trippers and is eighth in career RBIs with 123.

** The pitching tandem of junior Bridget Holloway and freshman Lena Brottman has accounted for 33 victories and 154 strikeouts in 225 innings of action.  Holloway leads the Emory mound corps and the UAA in victories with a 17-1 slate while Brottman is right behind at 16-1.  In NCAA statistics as of May 1, Holloway was No. 2 nationally among D-III hurlers in fewest walks per 7 innings (0.40) and her ERA of 1.25 is tied for the No. 2 spot in the UAA and among the top 20 on the national scene.  Brottman leads the league with a classy 1.17 ERA and has fanned 98 batters in a team-high 119 1/3 innings of action.
