Emory Women's Basketball Takes To The Road For Case Western & Carnegie Mellon Contests

GAME FACTS – After splitting a pair of home University Athletic Association home games this past weekend, the Emory women's basketball team gears up for a pair of road dates.  On Friday (Jan. 20), the Eagles square off against Case Western Reserve before matching up against Carnegie Mellon on Sunday.  Horsburgh Gym on the CWRU campus will serve as the site of the 47th meeting between the Eagles and Spartans with tip slated for 6:00 pm.  On Sunday, the scene will switch to Skibo Gymnasium on the CMU campus for the 56th clash between Emory and CMU, with tip scheduled for approximately 2:00 pm.  

THE COACHES – Emory head coach Christy Thomaskutty (Tulane, '96) is in her 14th season in charge of the Eagles.  She assumed her current duties prior to the start of the 2003-04 campaign and enters the Case Western contest with a school and career mark of 182-160. Thomaskutty is assisted by Misha Jackson, Kim Coleman and Savannah Morgan. 

Jennifer Reimer (Lycoming, '94) is in her 10th campaign in charge of the CWRU program and will take a school record of 117-130 into the Emory game.  She has directed the program to five winning campaigns.  In 20 years as a head coach, which includes stops at Allegheny College and Mount Union, Reimer posts a career mark of 274-223.

In her sixth season guiding the fortunes at Carnegie Mellon is Jacquie Hullah (Cal State Fullerton, '78).  Prior to a Friday home date against Rochester, Hullah had compiled a school record of 80-63.  In 2015-16, she directed the Tartans to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years, advancing to the Round of 16.  Now in her 18th campaign as a head coach, Hullah starts the weekend the owner of a career slate of 237-218.

2016-17 RECORDS – Emory claims an overall record of 10-4, 1-2 in the league.  The Eagles came out on the short end of their conference home opener to No. 9 Washington University on Friday, 76-65, before earning a thrilling come-from-behind decision over the University of Chicago, 74-71.  Senior Shellie Kaniut came through with solid performances in both affairs, tossing in a team-high 17.5 points while tying for the club lead with 6.0 rebounds.  Kaniut topped the squad's scoring attack in both games, picking up 15 points vs. Wash U and game-high 20 points vs. Chicago.  Sophomore Ashley Oldshue distinguished herself, averaging 15.5 points, shooting 55.6 percent from the field in the process, and 6.0 boards

So far this year, the Eagles are 5-1 at home and 5-3 in road/neutral settings. 

Case Western Reserve has gotten off to a good start with wins in 10 of its opening 14 contests.  The Spartans, 2-1 in league affairs, split a pair of road games last weekend, topping No. 24 New York University, 79-52, before falling at Brandeis, 81-69.  CWRU is 2-2 in home action this season. 

Carnegie Mellon, ranked 13th in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, hosts Rochester with an overall record of 13-1. The Tartans are 2-1 in UAA play and are coming off a road sweep of Brandeis (65-58) and NYU (66-61).  CMU will begin the weekend with a 4-1 ledger in home contests.

SERIES RECORDS – Case Western leads the all-time series, which began in December of 1988, by a 26-20 margin.  The Spartans won both meetings last season, 76-62 in Atlanta and 75-73 in Cleveland.  Case has been victorious in 15 of the 23 battles that have been contested on its home court.

In a series that also has its origins in December of 1988, Emory holds an all-time mark of 36-19 vs. Carnegie Mellon. Each team came away with a win last year with Emory notching a 63-52 verdict in Atlanta and the Tartans a 70-62 outcome in Pittsburgh.  Emory is 15-13 vs. CMU at Skibo Gym.

EMORY TRIO TO SERVE AS CAPTAINS – Serving as captains of the 2016-17 Emory women's basketball team are seniors Michelle Bevan (Houston, TX) and Shellie Kaniut  (Vienna, VA) and Fran Sweeney (Germantown, PA).  

KANIUT SHINES IN WASH U & CHICAGO GAMES – Shellie Kaniut made a run for UAA Player of the Week honors with a pair of stellar efforts this past weekend vs. Wash U and Chicago.

Kaniut led the team in scoring in both contests, ending the weekend with a team-best 17.5 points-per-game average while tying for the club's lead in rebounding (6.0 rpg).  In addition, Kaniut, who shot 53.3 percent (16 of 30) from the floor, recorded team-best averages in assists (4.0 apg) and steals (2.5 spg).  Kaniut tallied 15 points vs. the Bears of Wash U, hitting six-of-nine field goal attempts, including one trey, and finished with a game-high tying seven rebounds (season high) and game-bests with six assists (season high) and four steals. She followed that performance with a game-high 20 points, draining a career-high 10 field goals in 21 attempts, in registering her 10th double-figure scoring effort of the season.

Through 14 outings, Kaniut is second on the squad and eighth among UAA players in overall scoring with a 13.7 per-game average.  She has totaled three contests of 20 or more points, and her 45.2 percent (80 of 177) showing from the field is 16th among UAA players.  In league play, she is ninth in the conference in scoring (14.0 ppg) and 11th in field goal percentage (.475, 19 of 40).

OLDSHUE CONTINUES STEADY PLAY –  Ashley Oldshue chalked up a pair of double-figure scoring performances this past weekend, scoring 12 points against Wash U and 19 against Chicago.  Oldshue also registered her third double-double of the season in the outing against the Maroons, grabbing 10 rebounds. She shot 55.6 percent (10 of 18) from the floor over the two games and was successful on 11-of-17 free throw opportunities.

Oldshue, who has either led or shared for team scoring honors on five occasions this year, is in the midst of a team-high 11-game double-figure scoring streak (13 on the season).  Her 16.4 per-game overall scoring effort tops the club and is sixth among UAA players.  Her 54.8 percent showing (80 of 146) by far leads the squad, slots her in the No. 5 position on the league chart and is 33rd among all D-III players (through Jan. 16).  One of the UAA's top free throw shooters, her 81.0 percent (68 of 83) from the stripe paces team, is sixth in the UAA and 87th among all D-III players. In conference tilts, she finds herself fourth on the league's scoring ladder (18.0 ppg) and is second in field goal percentage (.586, 17 of 29).

She has been consistent on the boards, pulling down 7.6 caroms per contest, good for fifth on the league list.  She has finished with seven or more rebounds in seven of her last eight and in a total of 10 games, and per-game average of 3.8 offensive rebounds is second in the UAA.

SWEENEY A LONG-RANGE THREAT – Despite hitting just one three pointer in both the Wash U and Chicago games, Fran Sweeney holds down the No. 2 position on the UAA list in three-point shooting with a 44.8 percent (30 of 67) mark, good for 11th place in the D-III ranks.

Sweeney has eight performances with two or more triples to her credit this season and her 2.1 treys per contest is tied for the No. 2 spot on the UAA ladder.   Career-wise, her 127 three-point field goals ranks fifth all-time in program history.

EMORY STRONG ON THE GLASS – Emory has been formidable when it comes to rebounding, enjoying an edge in that department in 12 games.   Heading into the Case Western Reserve contest, the Eagles post a 45.0-34.4 per-game advantage, and stand second in the UAA and 20th in D-III in rebound margin (+10.6).

After being outboarded in its first two league games (38-40 vs. Rochester & 28-45 vs. Wash U), Emory posted a 50-36 advantage in the Chicago contest, the ninth time this year it enjoyed a double-digit margin. 

NUMBERS TO NOTEShellie Kaniut's 35-point weekend upper her career total to 788 points, good for 19th place on the program's all-time scoring ladder … Kaniut will now take aim at Christie Howard's (1996-2000) 18th-place total of 817 points … Kaniut has 39 career contests of double-figure scoring to her credit … Over the last five games, Ashley Oldshue is shooting 67.4 percent (29 of 43) from the floor … In overall action, Oldshue is fourth in the UAA in free throws per game (4.9 ftpg) … Senior Michelle Bevan closed out the Chicago game with her first double-double of the season and second of her career when she chipped in 12 points along with a game- and career-high tying 11 rebounds …  Bevan has notched double-figure scoring on four occasions, all of which have come over the past five contests … She is averaging 11.0 points in UAA action, good for 18th place among the league leaders … Freshman Erin Lindahl grabbed nine rebounds against Chicago, her second-highest effort of the year … Freshman Allison Chernow's 12 points against Wash U represented her fourth double-figure effort of the year … Freshman Lindsey Tse tops the UAA ladder and is 10th among all UAA players (though Jan. 16) with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.56 … Emory is averaging 80.2 points and shooting 45.9 percent (310 of 676) from the floor in its 10 victories vs. 68.8 points and 40.9 percent from the field in its four setbacks … Emory has outscored the opposition in 33 quarters while being outpointed in 18 – five quarters have been tied … Michelle Bevan is second on the team and is 17th in the league in rebounding (5.3 rpg) … Ashley Oldshue has turned in six games of five or more offensive caroms … The Eagles have enjoyed an edge in bench scoring in eight contests, most recently vs. Rochester (Jan. 7) by a 23-19 margin … Emory has doled out 20 or more assists in three contests and rank first in the UAA and 10th in Division III  (through Jan. 16) with an average of 18.1 per outing … Michelle Bevan owns 23 career double-figure scoring games  … Emory is connecting a league-best 35.4 percent (69 of 195) from three-point range in overall play, good for 33rd among all D-III programs (through Jan. 16) … Emory has won 37 of its last 49 and 53 of its last 68 home games … The Eagles have won their last 22 and are 46-4 during Thomaskutty's tenure as head coach when scoring 80 or more points (4-0 in '16-17; 2-0 in '15-16; 1-0 in '14-15; 5-0 in 2013-14; and 7-0 in 2012-13) ...
