Emory Women's Basketball Wins At Case Western Reserve

Sophomore Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod led five double-figure scorers with 16 points and the Emory women's basketball team used a big fourth-quarter effort in posting a Friday evening road win at Case Western Reserve.  The Eagles upped their overall record to 11-4, 2-2 in the University Athletic Association with a 79-65 decision over the Spartans who slipped to 10-5 in overall play, 2-2 in the UAA.

Jackson-Sherrod, who scored 12 first-half points, ended the evening eight-of-10 from the floor in notching her fourth double-figure scoring performance of the campaign.  Sophomore Ashley Oldshue totaled 15 points, 12 in the second half, sinking six field goals in eight tries.  Senior Michelle Bevan recorded her second straight double-double, scoring 13 points and tying for team honors with 10 rebounds.  Senior Fran Sweeney picked up all 12 of her points in the second half, knocking down four three pointers, and tied Bevan with 10 caroms.  Senior Shellie Kaniut closed out the double-digit scorers with 12 points while doling out six assists.

Emory trailed by a 61-60 margin entering the final stanza but outpointed Case by a 19-4 margin over the final 10 minutes of action.  Emory was successful on seven of its 13 field goal tries during the decisive frame while the Spartans managed to convert just two of their 13 opportunities.  Emory scored the first eight points of the period with Kaniut and Oldshue hitting a pair of buckets in that stretch. After a basket by the Spartans' Kara Hageman, the Eagles rattled off a 7-0 spurt, started with a Sweeney three pointer and capped by a pair of baskets by Jackson-Sherrod, to take a stranglehold on the game at 75-63 with 1:49 remaining.

For the game, the Eagles connected on 47.1 percent (33 of 70) of their field goal attempts while CWRU posted an effort of 37.5 percent (24 of 64).  Emory shot 54.8 percent (17 of 31) over the final two quarters of play.  The Eagles were successful on 42.9 percent (6 of 14) from beyond the arc while Case hit on 29.4 percent (10 of 34).  Emory enjoyed a big 51-37 bulge in rebounding.

Emory faced an eight-point deficit early in the third quarter but regrouped to post an 11-3 run, with Oldshue scoring six straight points and Sweeney hitting a trey, to knot the score at 49-49. Hillary Hellman then scored five straight points to give the Spartans a 54-49 advantage, but a Sweeney three pointer and an Oldshue drive to the rim knotted the score at 54-54 with 2:00 left in the quarter.  Oldshue (10 pts.) and Sweeney (9 pts.) enjoyed big efforts in the stanza, accounting for 19 of the team's 26 points.

In an entertaining first half that featured a total of 14 lead changes, Case Western took a 36-34 lead into halftime. Emory outshot the Spartans from the floor, hitting on 41 percent (16 of 39) of its attempts compared to 38.2 percent (13 of 34).  CWRU converted six three pointers to the Eagles one trey. After building a 20-17 advantage after the first stanza, the Spartans scored five of the second quarter's opening seven points to claim a 25-19 advantage.  Emory responded with a 7-0 spurt, with Bevan scoring five points in that stretch, to take a one-point edge, but Hageman scored five of the Spartans' next six points to put them ahead, 31-28, with 3:59 left in the stanza.  A basket by Jackson-Sherrod, two of her game-high 12 first-half points, gave Emory a 34-33 lead with 2:18 on the clock, but a three-point play by CWRU's Kendall McConico closed out the scoring for the half.  Jackson-Sherrod sank six-of-eight field goal attempts en route to her point total while Kaniut and Bevan tallied eight and seven points, respectively.

Emory returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 22) when it plays at No. 13 Carnegie Mellon University.
