Women's Basketball Upended at Chicago, 67-51

Women's Basketball Upended at Chicago, 67-51

The Emory University women's basketball team fell to the University of Chicago, 67-51, Sunday afternoon in Chicago, IL.

After the loss the Eagles (13-7, 7-4) sit in a tie for second place in the UAA with WashU (13-9, 7-4). The Eagles only trail behind NYU who have a UAA-leading record of 10-1 in conference play with three games remaining in the regular season.

Junior Claire Brock was the Eagles leading scorer with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting to go along with two steals. Senior Anna Arato has been the model of consistency this year putting up 14 points, four rebounds and one block. On the defensive end, junior Mariane Auza chalked up four steals and a block while freshman Morgan Laudick had a good showing off the bench with five points and three rebounds. For the University of Chicago, Klaire Steffens led the way with 21 points.

Emory had a solid day on the defensive end, forcing the Maroons into 13 turnovers and held Chicago to just seven second chance points and five fastbreak points. However, the Eagles had a tough shooting day with a 35.7% mark from the field and 50% from the charity stripe. The Maroons got to the line a lot compared to the Eagles, shooting 16 total free throws to Emory's two total.

The Eagles took an early lead over the Maroons on a silky-smooth jumper from senior Tori Huggins to give Emory a 5-4 lead. A late 9-4 run in the first quarter would give Chicago a 21-13 lead at the end of the first. The Eagles bounced back with a strong second quarter including a 5-0 run by the Eagles, highlighted by a deep Brock three, and went into the second half down only three, 37-34. The third quarter was a draw between the two teams as they both tightened up their defenses. It was the fourth and final quarter that the Maroons pulled away, holding the Eagles to six points across the final 10 minutes to earn the 16-point victory.

The Eagles return to the court on Wednesday at 6:00 PM when they travel to Demorest, GA to take on Piedmont for their last non-conference game of the season. The game is a makeup of the originally scheduled contest from January 5.
