2021-22 Women's Basketball Season Recap

2021-22 Women's Basketball Season Recap

The Emory University women's basketball team churned out another successful season, thanks in large part to the play of its seniors and a breakout performance from a junior, with a record of 15-9 marking its sixth consecutive year with a winning record.

Under the stewardship of Head Coach Misha Jackson, the 2021-22 Eagles squad finished tied for second in UAA play for the third year in a row with a conference record of 8-6.

Strong defensive principles around the three-point arc and a conservative offense proved to be the pillars for a strong Eagles squad as Emory finished first in the conference and 30th in the nation in three-point percentage allowed (23.9%) and turned the ball over infrequently with the fewest in the conference (47th in DIII). The Eagles also proved to be sharp from behind the three-point arc as well finishing third in the conference and 84th in the nation with a three-point shooting percentage of 30.7%.

The Eagles offense was helmed by two steady seniors and a breakout performance from one of the juniors. Seniors Anna Arato and Tori Huggins were solid forces on offense for the Eagles as they were two of the three players to average in double digits in points per game. Arato, who played in and started every game for the Eagles, finished top three on the team in field goal percentage, free throw percentage, rebounds and blocks. Huggins showed off her multifaceted game as a stretch big where she finished with a three-point percentage of 38.4% while also leading the team in total blocks with 23.

Junior Claire Brock was the breakout star for the Eagles with a scoring average of 16.2 points per game, the highest mark for the Eagles during the 2021-22 campaign, increasing her scoring average by 15.4 points from her last full season of play. Brock distinguished herself as a three-point threat finishing first in the conference and 16th in the nation in three-point percentage hitting at a 40.5% clip for the season. Brock was an alite scoring talent outside of three-point shooting as well finishing in double figures in 20 of the 23 games she played in.

A stingy Eagles defense that forced the second most turnovers in the conference was spearheaded by junior Mariane Auza who quarterbacked the defense and was responsible for guarding the opposing team's best player on most nights. Auza led the team in steals at 2.7 per game which is the sixth best mark in program history and the second-best mark in the conference this season.

Despite starting the season out with a tough loss to LaGrange and navigating three Covid related game cancellations, the Jackson-guided Eagles closed out the non-conference portion of their season with a 6-3 record including a three-game winning streak to lead them into conference play.

Emory opened conference play with a thriller on the road against Rochester which the Eagles eventually dropped in overtime but they wouldn't let that deter them as they rattled off five straight wins following the loss. Emory would go on to alternate wins and losses the rest of the way but in doing so picked up a win over WashU on the road marking the Eagles first ever defeat of the Bears on WashU's home court. Despite the Eagles best efforts they were unable to secure an at-large bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles had two student-athletes earn spots on All-UAA Teams: Brock landed on the All-UAA First Team while Arato earned an All-UAA Honorable Mention nod. In addition to the All-UAA selection Brock was also named to the D3Hoops.com All-Region Second Team. Brock finished top-five in the conference in nearly every scoring category including points per game, three-point percentage and free throw percentage. Brock also cemented herself in the history books when she dropped a career-high 28 points against Case Western Reserve on January 21st. Arato, who was a model of consistency, scored in double figures in all but five games this season and put up a career-high 22 points in a win over WashU on February 11th.

In addition to Arato and Huggins, the Eagles will see the departure of fellow senior Kennedy Cater who played in and started 22 games for Emory while finishing second on the team dishing out 2.1 assists per game.
