Second-Ranked Emory Dominates Sewanee in Home Opener

The Emory University women's soccer team, ranked second among NCAA Division III squads, opened its 2012 home season in strong fashion on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of the South 9-0 at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Emory remained undefeated on the season with the victory, improving to 4-0-1 on the year and extending its regular season undefeated streak to 29 games (26-0-3).  Sewanee dropped to 2-4-0 in 2012 with the loss.

Junior Clare Mullins opened the scoring early for the Eagles, notching the first goal of the game at the 1:33 mark, off assists from sophomores Emily Feldman and Karina Rodriguez.  Before the end of the half, Rodriguez would add on a pair of goals of her own, while junior co-captain Kelly Costopoulos, freshman Jordan Morell, senior Katy Kruse and sophomore Meredith Doherty each scored as well.  Junior Veronica Romero came off the bench to assist on three of the goals, while senior Lee Bachouros assisted on two in the first half.

Emory continued to control possession in the second half, as Romero would score the only goal of the frame for the Eagles in the 81st minute, off an assist from Kruse.

Romero notched her first five points of the season in the contest (a goal and three assists) and now leads all Eagles in assists this season.  Rodriguez and Costopoulos each scored their team-high third goals of the season in the game, and Rodriguez's eight points (three goals and two assist) during the year are an Emory best.

The Eagles will look to complete the perfect weekend on Sunday, as the squad will play host to Roanoke College at 1:00 PM at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
