#1 Emory Wins 2-0 over Rochester on ‘Senior Day’

The top-ranked Emory University women's soccer team paid tribute to its senior class prior to the start of Sunday morning's University Athletic Association (UAA) game against the University of Rochester, and then followed with what has become a familiar result to the team's fourth-year players, as the Eagles claimed a 2-0 win over the Yellowjackets at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The Eagles utilized a pair of second half goals to power towards the victory, scored by junior Kelly Costopoulos and sophomore Emily Feldman.  However, it was Emory's team-effort on defense that led the way once again, as the squad held the Yellowjackets to just four shots in the game, only two of which were on goal.

The win raised Emory's record to 10-0-3 on the season, as the Eagles remained among the nine undefeated Division III teams this season.  Emory also improved to 3-0-1 in conference play, staying even atop the UAA standings with Washington University (Mo.), which claimed a 2-1 win over Brandeis on Sunday.

Rochester dropped to 3-10-0 on the season, and to 0-4-0 in UAA play.

The goal by Costopoulos came in the 55th minute, breaking a scoreless tie in the Eagles' favor.  The score was set up by a cross from the near side by freshman Jordan Morell, which found the feet of Costopoulos inside the six-yard box.  The junior was able to send a quick shot into the upper corner of the goal for her sixth score of the season, matching Veronica Romero for the team lead.  It was the second assist of the season for Morell.

Feldman was able to take advantage of a corner kick in the 76th minute to extend Emory's lead.  Junior Greta Jochmann took the corner, finding senior Merrill Bachouros inside the six-yard box.  Bachouros took a shot that was deflected by the defense, but right to Feldman, who was able to finish for her third score of the year.  Bachouros earned her second assist of the year, while Jochmann claimed her third.

The two second-half goals game after Emory dominated possession in the first half, holding a 16-1 advantage in total shots, a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-0 lead in corner kicks after the first 45 minutes.  However, the best scoring chance of the half belong to the Yellowjackets, when Katie Sappio launched an open shot from inside the box in the 22nd minute, but Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein was able to make the save to keep the contest scoreless.

Senior Kaele Leonard earned the victory in goal, making one save, and improving to 5-0-3 on the season.

For Emory's senior class – Lee Bachouros, Merrill Bachouros, Ashley Kaiser, Katy Kruse, Leonard and Stein – it marked the 51st win over their 73-game careers as Eagles, one of the most-successful stretches in the program's history.

The Eagles will play their final home game of the 2012 regular season on Thursday, October 18th, as Emory will host Lee University, the second-ranked team in the NAIA this year.
