Top-Ranked Emory Remains Undefeated with Win over Covenant

The Emory University women's soccer team closed out its 2012 regular season non-conference schedule in dominating fashion on Monday night, as the top-ranked Eagles claimed an 3-0 win over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA to remain undefeated on the season.

With the win, Emory improved to 11-0-4 on the season, and extended its regular season undefeated streak to 39 games, the longest active stretch in Division III women's soccer.  Covenant dropped to 12-4-1 on the year with the loss.

The Eagles wasted little time taking a lead in the game, striking just 34 seconds into the contest, when Charlotte Butker's pass into the pass found Kelly Costopoulos inside the box.  Costpoulous was able to send the ball past the Lady Scots' keeper for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Emory extended its lead in the fourth minute of play, when  Veronica Romero equaled Costopoulos for the team lead in goals, scoring her seventh of the season at the 3:59 mark off a pass from defender Lauren Gorodetsky.  The Eagles made it a 3-0 game heading into the half, when freshman Jordan Morell headed in her second collegiate goal in the 39th minute, off a pass from Claudia Rowe, her fourth assist of the season.

With the game under control, the Eagles focused on a possession game in the second half, outshooting the Lady Scots 7-2 during the frame, including just one shot on goal for Covenant.  Emory finished the game with an 18-5 edge in shots overall for the game, as the Eagles' defense picked up their ninth shutout of the 2012 season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, when the team resumes University Athletic Association (UAA) play on the road against Brandeis University at 4:00 PM, the first game of season-ending three game conference road swing.

Emory Notes
Charlotte Butker's assist was her team-leading 10th of the season, two shy of the program's single-season record, set by Talia Dweck in 2009… Her 10 assists this year tie her for the fourth-most in school history, with Diana Spock (1994) and Skye Hardin (1996)… The game-winning goal was the team-leading fourth of the season for Costopoulos, and the ninth of her career, tying her for fourth in school history with four other Emory players… Her nine career game-winning goals are the most by an Eagle since Nancy Wilson (2002-05)… Costopoulos' 19 career goals overall are tied for the 13th-0most in school history… Emory has now scored 46 goals this season, tied for the 10th-most in the program's history… The Eagles are now 33-0-6 over their last 39 regular season games… This was the first ever meeting between Emory and Covenant… Covenant's defense had gone 15-straight games without allowing more than one goal in a game, dating back to a season-opening 4-0 loss at Messiah College on August 31st.
