Emory Men Win Miami Invitational; Women Finish Second

The Emory University swimming teams wrapped up 2010 in grand fashion on Saturday, as the men came away with a victory at the Miami University Invitational, while the women finished second among eight teams at the meet.

Despite facing mostly NCAA Division I competition, the Emory men scored 1,754 points during the meet to finish well ahead of second-place Miami, which scored 1,421 points, and third-place Denison University, which scored 1,220.5.  The women finished with 1,706 points, behind only Miami's 2,604 points, but well ahead of third-place Oakland University's 1,146 points.

In addition, two more Emory program records fell on Saturday, as sophomore Peter O'Brien and senior April Whitley each broke all-time marks for the second time during the meet.  O'Brien won the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke with an 'A' cut time of 2:00.26, besting his own school record set earlier in the day.  Whitley finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with an 'A' cut time of 2:17.82 to beat her own school record set last season.

Individually for the women during the final session, the Eagles had four 'A' cut performances in the 200-yard backstroke, led by reigning NCAA Division III National Champion Anne Culpepper, who finished third in the event with a time of 2:00.77, the fifth-fastest time in school history.  Other 'A' cut performances in the event for Emory came from freshman Sadie Nennig (sixth, 2:01.94), junior Whitley Taylor (10th, 2:02.99) and sophomore Taryn Lushinsky (12th, 2:03.82).  Sophomore Jacqueline Schneider had a 'B' cut time of 2:04.83 in the event.

Senior Liz Horvat led the way for the Eagles in the 500-yard freestyle, recording an 'A' cut time of 4:55.88 and finishing fourth overall.  Notching 'B' cut times in the event were freshman Courtney McDermott (eighth, 4:58.75), Culpepper (ninth, 4:59.03) and senior Amy Minowitz (15th, 5:04.77).

In the 200-yard breaststroke, besides Whitley's record setting performance, senior Katie Mroz finished fifth with an automatic qualifying time of 2:19.54, while senior Marie Kim finished 16th in a 'B' cut time of 2:23.82.  In the 100-yard butterfly, both sophomore Leslie Hackler (sixth, 56.26) and Schneider (20th, 57.51) had 'B' cut performances, while junior Claire Pavlak finished second with an 'A' cut time of 50.81 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, followed by 'B' cut performances from sophomore Ann Wolber (seventh, 51.85) and freshman Suzanne Lemberg (12th, 52.14).

To round out the individual performances, freshman Brooke Woodward finished third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.26, good for an 'A' cut and the sixth-fastest performance in school history.  Emory freshman Laura Manor (seventh, 2:07.35), Nennig (eighth, 2:08.09), Whitley (12th, 2:07.91), sophomore Mia Michalak (13th, 2:07.99) and junior Jennifer Aronoff (14th, 2:08.01) all had 'B' cut times in the event.

The women also had strong relay performances during the final session.  In the 200-yard medley relay, Nennig, Whitley, Hackler and Pavlak finished second with an 'A' cut time of 1:43.77, the fourth-fastest in school history, while Schneider, Aronoff, senior Morgan Klinzing and Wolber finished fifth with a 'B' cut time of 1:45.09.  In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Wolber, Lemberg, Whitley Taylor and Pavlak finished second with an 'A' cut time of 3:26.59, the fifth-fastest in school history, while sophomore Renee Rosenkranz, freshman Jennifer Pak, Hackler and Klinzing recorded a 'B' cut time of 3:30.09 for a seventh-place finish.

For the men, Peter O'Brien recorded both of the Eagles' 'A' cut times during the final session.  In his record setting performance in the 200-yard breaststroke, he was followed by sophomore Justin Beegle in fourth place with a provisional qualifying time of 2:06.05.  O'Brien also won the 200-yard individual medley with an 'A' cut time of 1:51.24, and was followed in third place by junior Ben Redpath (1:54.68) and in fourth by senior Mackenzie Perry (1:54.73) each with a 'B' cut time. 

Emory junior Jared Dubnow had a 'B' cut time of time of 1:52.16 in the 200-yard backstroke, good for a second-place finish, while senior Mark Bernstein recorded a provisional mark of 4:33.66 in the 500-yard freestyle, good for a sixth-place finish.  Freshman Ross Spock placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 45.27 seconds, the third-fastest time in Emory history.

The Eagles had also had four NCAA provisional qualifiers in the 100-yard butterfly, led by junior Patrick Augustyn who finished second with a time of 49.78 seconds.  Other provisional qualifiers in the event were third-place freshman Matt O'Brien (50.31), fourth-place Perry (50.43) and fifth-place sophomore Stephen Czaja (50.48).

Emory also received a pair of 'B' cut performances from its 200-yard medley relay teams, as Spock, Peter O'Brien, Augustyn and freshman Ryan Bass finished first with a time of 1:31.28, the third-fastest in school history, while freshman Abhijan Khosla, Beegle, Czaja and sophomore Richard Upton finished fourth in a time of 1:33.28.

Emory finished the three-day meet with a combined total of five new program records, 45 'A' cut times and 125 'B' cut times between the men's and women's squads.

The Eagles will return to action on January 10th, 2011, traveling to the University of Tampa for an 11:00 AM meet.
