Swimming and Diving Returns Home with Resounding Victory Over Birmingham-Southern

The Emory swimming and diving teams traveled to Birmingham-Southern for a dual meet with the Panthers on Saturday and came away with a resounding win. The men won their end of the meet 197-80 and the women won 215-62, combining for a 412-142 victory. On the women's side, freshman swimmers won six events. The Eagles touched first in every event outside of the men's 50y Freestyle.

Highlighting the day for the Eagles was newcomer, freshman Katie Cohen, who won two events on Saturday. Cohen touched first in the 100y Breaststroke (1:06.26) and 200y Breaststroke (2:24.47). Senior Penelope Helm also won two events, winning the 200y Freestyle (1:53.98) and 500y Freestyle (5:08.73).

Also touching first for the Eagles on the women's side was sophomore Penny Celtnieks in the 100y Backstroke (57.77), freshman Maren McDonald in the 100y Butterfly (57.78), freshman Katherine Swan in the 1000y Freestyle (10:51.65), freshman Natalie Boorjian in the 50y Freestyle (24.45), freshman Meredith Teague in the 400y IM (4:38.98), junior Rosalie Gaudiani in the 200y Butterfly (2:10.57), senior Moshelle Borjigin in the 100y Freestyle (53.75), and sophomore Jane Sanderson in the 200y Backstroke (2:04.79).

Additionally, senior Tess Klugherz picked up wins in the one-meter (263.47 and three-meter (262.50) diving events.

Stealing the show for the men were junior Jeff Echols and senior Ryan Gibbons, who both won two events in the meet. Echols kicked things off for the Eagles, touching first in the 100y Backstroke (51.12) and 200y Butterfly (1:51.43). Gibbons took home wins in the 400y IM (4:04.06) and the 500y Freestyle (4:40.41).

Other Eagles taking home wins for the men include junior Liyang Sun in the 100y Breaststroke (56.45), senior Ryan Soh in the 100y Butterfly (50.44), junior Crow Thorsen in the 1000y Freestyle (9:35.27), freshman McKee Thorsen in the 200y Freestyle (1:42.61), junior Johnny Bradshaw in the 100y Freestyle (46.22), sophomore Will Kohn in the 200y Backstroke (1:50.78), and senior Jake Meyer in the 200y Breaststroke (2:01.95).

In relays, the Eagles took home two wins, including two women's teams finishing with a dead heat in the 400y Freestyle Relay. The team of Boorjian, Sanderson, sophomore Kate Eaton, and junior Jada Chatoor tied with Helm, Gaudiani, senior Leaya Ma, and freshman Cece York at 3:34.68. The men's team of C. Thorsen, M. Thorsen, Soh, and Kohn won the 400y Freestyle Relay at 3:08.68.

The Eagles will be back in the pool on Friday, November 3rd for the Emory Fall Invitational. The event will get started at the Woodruff P.E. Center at 6:00 PM.
