#2 Emory Sweeps Nationally-Ranked Opponents on Saturday

The second-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis Team claimed a pair of wins against nationally-ranked squads in Sewanee, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon, defeating the 15th-ranked University of the South 8-1 in the early contest, and downing conference-rival and 25th-ranked Case Western Reserve University 7-2 in the late one.

With the two wins on Saturday, Emory has opened its 2014 season with a perfect 3-0 record.  Sewanee dropped to 1-1 for the campaign, while Case fell to 3-1.

The pair of wins against the nationally-ranked opponents were made even more impressive by the fact that Emory Head Coach Amy Bryant was able to play 12 different singles players and six different doubles teams during the day.

Emory took two of the three doubles matches against Sewanee, with freshman Michelle Satterfield and senior Brenna Kelly claiming an 8-0 win at second doubles, and freshmen Katarina Su and Michelle DeMeo winning 8-5 at third doubles.  The Eagles went on to sweep all six singles matches, with senior Gabrielle Clark winning 6-2, 6-2 at first singles, Satterfield earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles and freshman Melissa Goodman picking up a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles.  Rounding out Emory's tally of singles winners were Su at fourth singles (6-1, 6-3), junior Catharine Harris at fifth singles (6-0, 6-0) and freshman Bruna Correa at sixth singles (6-1, 6-0).

The Eagles also won two of the three doubles matches in the late affair, edging out their counterparts from Case in both wins.  At first doubles, junior Rebecca Siegler and sophomore Madison Gordon claimed a 9-8 (3) win, while junior Danielle Truitt and freshman Bruna Correa won 9-7 at third doubles.

Emory would go on to take five of the six singles matches, with wins from Siegler (6-1, 6-2) at first singles, sophomore Beatrice Rosen (6-1, 6-1) at second singles, Gordon (6-0, 6-1) at third singles, sophomore Marissa Levine (6-3, 2-6, 10-3) at fifth singles and DeMeo (6-0, 6-1) at sixth singles.

Emory will be back in action on Tuesday, February 25th, when the Eagles host their first two home matches of the 2014 campaign against Georgia Gwinnett College at 1:30 PM and Oglethorpe University at 5:30 PM.
