Second-Ranked Women’s Tennis Dominant in Shutout of #8 Middlebury

The second-ranked Emory University Eagles opened its challenging weekend schedule with a dominant performance on Friday afternoon, defeating eighth-ranked Middlebury College 9-0 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

The Eagles swept all three doubles matches, and failed to drop a set in singles play, en route to the victory.  Emory improved to 16-2 overall, including a 10-0 mark against Division III opponents, while Middlebury dropped to 6-4.

The Eagles claimed their first point of the match at first doubles, where senior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Michelle Satterfield defeated Kaysee Orozco and Sadie Shackelford 8-1.  Emory freshman Melissa Goodman and senior Brenna Kelly followed with an 8-6 win at third doubles, while sophomore Beatrice Rosen and freshman Katarina Su won with an identical score at second doubles.

Clark's doubles victory was the 99th of her career, moving her closer to becoming the third player in school history to reach the century mark in doubles wins, and six victories shy of Zahra Dawson's program record.

In singles play, Clark was the first to finish, earning a tidy 6-0, 6-3 win over Alexandra Fields in the first singles match.  Satterfield followed with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Margot Marchese at third singles to clinch the team victory.

Other singles wins came from Rosen at second singles (6-0, 6-3), Goodman at fourth singles (6-2, 6-2), sophomore Madison Gordon at fifth singles (6-2, 6-1) and Su at sixth singles (6-3, 6-0).

The win was the fifth in as many matches this season for Emory against ranked Division III opponents, and their second-straight against a top-10 team.

The Eagles will face another challenging opponent on Saturday in Brunswick, facing fourth-ranked Amherst College at 9:30 AM.
